ipad deck...

by the way, apples smart move would have been to make a scaled down tablet (with rotating screen + keyboard) the size of a netbook that ran OSX with one USB port and SDcard slot. put it on garbage hardware since no one wants a 3GHz netbook, and boom. they would have crushed netbooks and kindles in one swoop, even if it started at 700. its not a laptop replacement since its too small and slow, its not a phone replacement, it can still read books and be interactive, but it wouldnt suck. they would have made a ******* killing.

This would have certainly cannibalized a large chunk of their macbook sales. Why? Not everyone who buys a macbook NEEDS the HP and featureset those provide. But... they want (or are told they need) an apple so they buy one. Since many of Apple buyers tend to be relatively affluent, they're not cross-shopping the macbook with gateways (or netbooks). They're simply swiping their card and moving on.

In your scenario, these buyers may be wowed enough by the swivel/tablet feature (people still till this day ooh and ahh when I swivel my POS HP tablet around) to end up overlooking the $1500+ macbook for the (in your world) $700 iTablet The Mac Genius (wtf?) will come and try and upsell them on all the great benefits (many of which this 'casual user' will never realize) of the much higher priced macbook... but that'll only hammer home the sheer fact that they didn't really need the muscle of the macbook in the first place. "I really only use it to go online and check my email so... I think this one with its fancy swivel screen will do just fine." Suddenly Apples laptop revenues drop 50% because they wanted to get into the netbook business. Who were they really competing with? Acer/HP/Dell or themselves in this scenario?

Simply put... Apple wants its $8 starbucks coffee drinkin, mercedes benz drivin, abercrombie and fitch wearin customers to keep buying their expensive computers. Releasing something that satisfies their basic needs while actually being 'cooler' than the much higher priced computers Apple sells would be a recipe for disaster.

Windows XP was designed to work with a typical desktop/laptop configuration. For that it does a sufficient job. Port it over to a tablet (ala windows xp tablet edition... which I'm unfortunately all too familiar with) and its resistive touch screen along does little to inspire. I only use it in that guise when I have to. Everything else is easier to do the traditional way. I'm not familiar with Windows 7 tablet (or whatever) so I can't speak to that... but the iPhone OS (for a portable, handheld device) is as good as it gets. Honestly, if it wasn't for THIS... I'd agree with presumably the rest of you in that the iPad will fail. Instead, being as familiar as I am with the iPhone, I KNOW it will do phenomenally well.

As far at what's better... again, it's subjective and largely dependent on the specific needs of the end-user. On paper that thing destroys the iPad. BFD!! Real world experience is what it's all about. Unfortuneatly... none of us can accurately attest to what thats actually like with the iPad so all this is purely conjecture at this point. And yes... I'm drinking.

You bring up an excellent point and a question that I don't think has been asked. Apple would be wise to allow the rather huge iPhone base the right to transfer their already bought iPhone titles (along with any books they may have bought through the likes of kindle) directly over to the iPad. Would be terrible PR if they don't...

3 year old tech? The original iPhone wasn't even 3G! This version surpasses even the 3Gs from a processor and RAM point of view so, while it may look, feel and operate much like the original... it's superior the way a 3 year near version should be. (faster processor, more RAM, bigger HD, longer lasting battery, more capable OS)

so, having no phone capability, no camera, no real OS, being higher priced, being larger, having the same capacity as an ipod touch, less capacity than an ipod classic, less ram and memory than a netbook thats two years old much less out now makes it, and i quote steve jobs, "magical" and "revolutionary"? please.

the iPhone users could and should be able to cheat like i have between my wifes and my phones - as long as the same iTunes user name and password are input into the device it should allow you to download multiple apps.

i'm not disagreeing with you that its going to sell well. i'm saying there are better devices for the car out there, which is what the OP is talking about. arguably they are better for the home too. factually, they are better for the car than an iPad ever will be. on paper, they are better for everything ;) but like i said, and to some extent you did too, it comes down to basically how pretty and easy to use it is. the lemmings will jump off cliffs for it.

i too, am drinking ALOT right now.

ok, and i should be cheerleading a company and its products like this because ..... ?

You've got something against a company maximizing profits? Where's Gordon Gecko??? Capitalism baby!!! Can you REALLY blame Apple if these numbnutz are gonna spend the cash? Nobody's holding a gun to their head.

it should have been, which is the only thing that made me keep my contract with sprint when the iphone came out. that was a HUGE s*** on their userbase. apple could have implemented it, ATT had the tech, they just wanted to save it for the 2G. it was completely transparent and total horse s***.

bingo. but there are those who fell prey to the might Cupertino marketing machine who, six months into the iPhone's lifespan, were swayed into thinking apple made some kind of stride or innovation. (beer) its all about dollars. and as i said, as a business owner i respect that. as an informed consumer its a crock.

Sometimes less is more. And sometimes more is more. Especially when you've drank as much as I drank tonight. L8R haters

five beers into this thread this makes so much and so little sense at the same time. i wish i could remember which. time for beer six. love you chico!

LOL The problem is, you guys are all looking at the world through your own eyes. It's obvious most of you are, like me, proud computer techno geek types. You wouldn't be on your damn computer this late if you weren't! No offense but... Apple doesn't give a s*** about us! There's no money in 'us'. We're the ones who analyze the s*** out of what they build and nitpick the crap out of it. Would YOU want that kind of business? Instead, they want the masses... Think about some of the tools and dumbasses you know with iPhones. They just LOVE to show off their new hot pink case and show you their 2 pages of apps. You think they care about multitasking? lol They're so thrilled to be able to play majong on their phone to care. Yes... there will be early adopter types that flock to the apple store to buy one of these pups next month. And yes there will be the techno-geeks sitting high on their thrones with smug looks of contempt as they mock them. But the REST of the world... THAT's what Apple cares about. It's like baseball. You're gonna win 1/3 of your games and lose 1/3 of your games. It's what you do with the other 1/3 that makes all the difference. Instead, in this case, the 1/3 is more like 98%

The more I think about it... the whole multitasking thing is a gag. The only reason the 2G/3G didn't have it was because there wasn't enough RAM. My old 3G jailbroken iPhone performed like a dog with just a couple programs running in the background. My 3Gs seems to handle it just fine. The iPad has even more RAM so I suspect it would handle it even better. The iPhone 4G will certainly have it and, by default, the iPad will as well. (iPhone OS 4.0) So Apple has wisely set the bar low... giving people things to criticiize... only to come out looking like heroes in the 11th hour. It's all marketing BS and nobody does it better. Mark my words. So pretty soon... you'll have to find something else to trash it for.

are you listening to the people in this thread? more than half have ipod touches or iphones and we are all trashing it but you. im sure others have older ipods. we clearly bought into the GUI thing but we are all saying this is garbage. apple "sheeple" dont want it. none of the fanboys i know want it, even the early adopters. HOW ARE THEY GOING TO SELL IT?! youre right they dont care about multitasking but for people who have bought apple products and were on the fence about the ipad, i guarantee they just lost millions of dollars because of the lack of that one feature. will iphone OS4 have it? who knows, theyve had 3 chances before and have blown it on all of them to date. it took them 3 years to add copy/paste and like 1.5 to add an app store. its an embarassment. as for the masses, you treat them like morons. yeah, i know a girl who has a pink case and shows off her apps, and she has a driod because shes not an idiot and knows ATT is bad. their target demo for this is not ignorant masses, really, it just flat out doesnt exist because NO ONE WANTS IT. they put up a prayer and hoped people would like it, and i dont know how they didnt see it coming, but no one does.

so now that the thread has been threadjacked to high hell.

original poster, the ipad will make for an awful head unit replacement.

half threadjacked. see my alt user name...
at least the OP got some useful input on whether its a device worth buying.
and we should continue to hate on this piece of trash while chico is asleep and wagonbacker hasnt shut us up yet

well, if you say so

hahaha great stuff. its not as fun with no one to bash except the general apple public, which i dont think will be into this anyways. oh well.
lets move on to new threadjacks: will this thread be locked or will wagonbacker attempt to clean it up?

i think its going to sell sadly. have you ever walked into an apple store? imagine a padded room full of zombies running into the walls. add feelings of bliss, deep pockets and a touch of gloss white to everything.

i think it wont sell enough to make their investors happy... i think when people take a second look at the price at 750 bucks theyre going to think twice. its the wrong time for a borderline product with limited features. i can buy a netbook and an itouch for less than that, and id be much happier with either. i dont get what people see in this, and neither does anyone ive talked to.

The 'people on this thread' don't represent the masses? Anyone who is going to spend time during/after the F'in superbowl to micro-analyze a product that hasn't even come out yet is a certifiable techie-geek. I'm proud to say I'm one of em but come on... none of you haters speak for the rest of the world. The people that'll make or break this product could care less about most of the stuff you're trashing it for. These are the same people that run off to buy Honda Accords, eat at Applebees and run out to load up on bread and milk when a big snowstorm is coming. There needs are simple and their thoughts are even more so. I'm not knockin em... Honda makes a nice car and Applebees...umm... yeah, I guess their food won't kill you. But don't think your modded Mazda driving, tweaked pc using, somewhat against the grain self represents the masses. Certain types of personalities will go against the norm simply for the sake of it. Others will follow the heard of sheep. Apple, wisely, wants the sheep. No money in the goats.... no wool.

fine, say it is idiot masses who will buy anything a good advertisement suggests (stupider than most). keep in mind 1 in 7 of these people is out of work and probably another 1/7 have taken a paycut. the rest have tried to trim the fat, cut corners, and save money since theyre afraid theyre next. dont believe me? look at monetary velocity and consumer confidence indicies. retail is in the toilet. no one is spending money.
so can you really convince these people, who already have devices that do everything this does, that this is worth spending a months worth of groceries on? gas for 2 months? a mortgage payment? youre kidding yourself. phones, laptops, a working car, food, etc are needs, this is just a shiny turd.
know why the kindle and netbooks sell well? theyre outstanding at what they do, and people who want a device like that will get them. NOT this, which is a jack of some trades, master of none.

As for what it is... it's NOT an oversized iPhone without the phone and camera. It IS an oversized Ipod Touch. You know... the 'other' device apple can't keep on the shelf. So.... yeah. not really sure where you were going with that.

Its not an oversized iphone w/o the camera and phone but its an oversized ipod touch?

Is it not true that the only differences between a touch and iphone is the iphone has a camera and can make calls but all else is the same?

There for, the iPad is an oversized iPhone, wtf? LOL

ipad = ifail

/apple

If you re-read the post I was responding to you'll (hopefully) understand why I said it wasn't indeed an oversized iPhone (without the camera and phone) but instead... an oversized Touch. If not... oh well.

As for Halfjack's comment about consumer spending/confidence... Sadly, he's right. While many have legit reasons to worry and tighten their belts... plenty of others (who really don't) are following suit anyway. I'm seeing it everywhere. It's like a new trend or something. Suddenly it's cool to be cheap. I'm all for being frugal and only buying things you need and can afford... but if those who CAN... aren't.... then we're all fvcked!! This nation was built on overspending and greed.

To me, this product screams "impulse buy", and will leave people hating themselves and posting them on ebay after 2 weeks only to lose $200.
