Question on O2 sensors

Thanks in advanced for helping...I joined today and looked for sometime for my answer but could not find it.

I'd like to replace my two O2 sensors on my 2001 Protege ES...as I understand there is one in front and one in back. I would like to order them online to save money. I am not sure if:

1) They are both the same kind?
2) What brand works best (saw a couple posts on this I think)?
3) I assume buy them at Rockauto?

For some time I have had a roughness and poor MPG. My 2001 Protege has had a history of poor/clogged EGR (I replaced that) and bad coils...but its never been back to 100% after I did all the work ( it used to be real bad but I trouble shooted fairly successful).

If you are buying universal o2 sensors then yes they are the same kind. If you are going for direct fit replacement then no they are not the same.

The front and back ones have different part numbers as the wiring harness for each sensor are different.

Universal sensors are a lot cheaper than the direct fit ones. With the universal sensors you have to wire it up to the old connector harness. As long as this is done properly they should work essentially the same.

I just got my direct fit o2 sensor and its plug and play. Don't get the universal because i read that some people had experienced problems and wished they had spent the little extra money. i purchased the primary o2 for 108 out the door at autozone. carquest had the secondary cheaper for 125.

I don't know who this was, but wiring in a universal O2 is as easy as matching colors and/or looking at a diagram that comes with the sensor. So easy a caveman could do it? Ya, something like that.

I guess not everyone wants to deal with it, but you can save ~$50 per sensor just by sodering 4 wires...

if soldering is involved im out. but then you have to buy a solder and solderer burn your self a couple times and then find out if your did it correctly? the universal is 65 plus tax at autozone so after buying the solder and saving yourself about 30 bucks. take it for my time not to do it. gl. Just got 20 bucks from autozone card to use on my next purchase the secondary sensor Sometime after christmas is done.

Unless you have a check engine light on, you do not need to replace your rear sensor. It does not at all affect your mpg - it only monitors the performance of your catalytic converter.

Only the front sensor monitors your air/fuel ratio.

Just did the same

My Check Engine light has been on a week or two. Finally had the codes read and it said the O2 sensor. I didn't want to mess with splicing wiring for a universal unit. I found front and back plug-in OEM units from Parts Train for about $50-60 each. Haven't put them in yet because I'll just let my son do that in high school auto class right after winter break. 137K miles now which is apparently a long time for the originals to last.
