Coming back from dealer to get an answer on why I'm having long starts, Rough Idle and drivability issues of bogging out,and No CEL. I'm thinking maybe a fuel pump. Well it turns out that their finding out that the timing chain is stretching and not allowing the VVT to do its job properly! So $1300 to get the job done. They want to replace the VVT, replace the chain and do some induction cleaning while their in there. Unbelievable. I have 75,000 miles on her in two years and I'm already throwing hard internal parts at her? Thats just not right! Always did Mobil 1 oil changes, never tracked or flogged this car, its my everyday car. Anyone else either do there own work or come across this issue? Thanks.(boom01)

Hey anything helps I will look into the manual and see what it takes. I was even looking at maybe a new 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 but if their not going to last I'm thinking not. Thanks again.

I had a Celica that had a stretched timing chain. I flogged the hell out of it, on and off the track. Wish I'd kept it.

Holy cow! I'm starting to think my extended warranty may yet pay off in the long run. Sorry to hear this- especially if you're not playing Speed Racer every day. You'd think a timing chain would last at least twice that long these days.

I would be extremely wary of that diagnosis.
Can you get a second opinion?

What are 3 threads about failure in a completely different car worth to this thread? If you've got nothing valuable to add to this situation, why post?

I did change a vvt because the engine was making nose when it was started. a lot of vvt on the L3-TC was changed of that reason... but I think that the diagnosis is very strange. if i were you, you got the have and second diagnosis. And we are taking about $1300 here.

Just google timing chain problems for this vehicle. And BTW, BUY A WARRANTY NOW. And I mean not just the cheapest thing you can buy, but the best one you can buy. believe me it will be worth it.

Interesting...

It seems that there are some timing chain issues with the CX-7.

It may be less of an issue with the MS3/MS6 because:

1) Many of these cars are owned by enthusiasts that tend to use high quality oil and change it more frequently than the 7500 mile recommended interval.

2) The engine is often operating under higher stress in the CX-7 (especially the AWD version).

Dunno if Mike had a 1zz-fe engine in his celica, but my 'Rolla was also flogged, hard, for 200K+, and when I was replacing valve seals, I measured the chain. toy uses a distance spec ( i think like 4.128") measured over 8 links It was at the spec limit, but looked ok. I avoided dealing with it then.

never had any symptoms from that, and still have not replaced the chain.

I think there is a tsb on our engine over the VVT bolt falling out, dont remember the specifics, but if it defaulted to the high rpm setting, that would make for a hard start

timing chain

Again I never flogged my speed 3 just used it about a 120 miles a day for work the last 3 years. Just can't believe the chain is stretched but if I'm going in there to do the work since I am out of warranty I should just change it also. Never will I consider a Mazda again if the chain is in fact the problem.
