Supercharging?

Has anyone ever supercharged an MS6. Is it a completely stupid idea? Any thoughts on super/turbo charging?

i presume you mean removing the turbo and installing a supercharger... I don't think there is a kit available thus far, and if there was, there are very few that would take it over a turbo.

No i actually mean adding a supercharger in addition to the turbo.

more trouble than it's worth. VW has a twincharge engine that does something similar. Supercharger for down low grunt, turbo for top end. I think it's VW anyway.

Ohh i know it would be a really tight fit.. but think of the room you gain with a FMIC and by removing the stock airbox.

yeah its VW i read about that..exactly my intentions though, supercharger for low RPM torque also caussing the turbo to spool up faster. Sounds like it might be worth it to me

I don't really know if it is. Our cars generate great torque down low compared to other turbo cars, so adding the SC would bog the engine down more. I don't think the ends justify the means, that's all.

I do find the twin charger concept interesting though. It does have an application on smaller displacement engines.

can we figure out how to make the actual turbocharger in this car work first before we do anything else to this poor engine. the fact that we are all brought to our knees by a plastic valve is enough to just concentrate on the car as is.

There comes a point, mechanically, when the design is too complex to make reliable. This is one of those ideas. Can someone out there make it work? Yes, I'm quite sure. Is it worth it? To someone, somewhere I'm sure it is. Is it worth it to the masses? Not even close. Would it be reliable? In no way, shape, nor form.

If you're taking a serious look at doing this, you'll be one of the very few. You'll also have to spend some real cash to make it work. At that point, because of the obscure application, you are in another league of conditions so foreseeable reliability is thrown out the window.

There was a post a couple months back about the effects of low-end torque on your guys' engine. It's not designed for that insane amount of torque down low at all. It almost always results in a bent or broken rod.

If you took the time to build the motor, research, engineer, and fabricate the setup and figure out a way to tune it, it would truly be a great feat.

Like everyone else says, it's not impossible cause nothing is.

There's an STI out there that is twin-charged.


It grenade-bombed it's engine while on the dyno for initial tuning.

Toyota sold a "Twin-charged" version of their 1.6L 1st gen MR-2 back in the day. Had a supercharger w/magnetic clutch engagement similar to an AC clutch and obviously a standard turbo as well. Wasn't that great....

twin charging can and has been done to numerous sti's without determental effects. The Shop i use here in Az (Forced Air Technologies ) has done it for years.
