black smoke from my exhaust.

So today I was driving and my friend was behind me and he told me that when I acclerated really fast that black smoke came out my exhaust. It wasnt alot of black smoke nor was it too thick. But what could it be from?

Also In my tank was 89 grade gas.. I had to use that because I needed to fill my car up with some gas or I would have been stranded. But could that be the cause for it?

that could be the case. u should have put in just enough to get home and kept it out of boost.

also are u running a bov in vta? cause if youre running rich you would have black smoke coming out.

Soot (sp). You dont see it all over your trunk lid when you wash the car or your tail pipe? This is common, not an issue and doubtful has anything to do with the 89 octane gas, although would consider running better fuel in your car. Turbos do that. Now if you start getting puffy white smoke all the time let us know...

i have a smog ghost following me all the time. (i dont have cats. maybe some dogs will scare it away) thats what my gf says lol.

Keep an eye on your oil level. I have an '07 MS3 and last year I noticed some smoke on acceleration and then noticed I was losing about 1/4 of oil about every 700-800 miles. One supposed Mazdaspeed certified dealer told me it was normal and then I took it to the dealer where I bought the car and it ended up being 2 bad cylinders and my engine was replaced under warranty. Not to freak you out or anything but just keep an eye on your oil level, if you are not losing oil then it's our normal rich as hell running engine.

I had black smoke which ended up bein a leaking injector stuck intake valve and an internally blown up pcv valve. 4500 dollars in labor later i'm back on the road lol not tryin to freak ya out but get a bleed down compression check possibly. Mine happened on throttle lift though so if ur accelleratin and it does it its normal

well the stuck injector is too much fuel....a blown up pvc valve...$4500...you must have blown the engine or something? i agree about on acceleration..

a puff of black smoke at WOT is completely normal, though i'll admit it's a bit disheartening. nuttin' like hitting boost on an onramp and feeling your back getting pushed against the seat, only to be followed by an icy chill in the heart when you look in the rearview mirror and seeing the ol' puff of black smoke.

Like edrive said, keep a close eye on the oil level [i check mine every time i gas up], but if the oil's good, all the black cloud means is that the car is running pig rich & blowing off steam in the form of semi-burned gasoline. (drive2)

Well.....when my wife would take the speed3 she complained about black smoke from the exhaust, I would tell her that I had never seen the black smoke she took the speed to the dealer and just as she was pulling in the speed3 blew the black stuff, the speed was under warranty and the turbo seal was leaking small but caused the smoke. Mazda replaced the entire turbo instead of replacing the seal.

that's odd. turbo seal leaks should be white smoke. usually noticed after idling for awhile. black smoke is unburnt fuel from running pig rich, something our cars just do.

Hmm now I'm concerned because I've noticed my exhaust being somewhat white in color, but thought maybe it had to do with me recently using seafoam on my engine a couple days ago. Would any red flags show up on an AP while monitoring if I did have a leak?
