Why do i keep hearing about people blowing there motor up. Per talking to ken he said that anything over 350hp will need rods, so i done see any reason other then people going crazy and not upgrading to forged internals.
can anyone else explain this?

Reasons for Booming:

Adding numerous mods that the ECU doesn't know what to do with.
Not having any EMS for the mods, no tune or a bad tune.
Upping the boost too much, weak internals.
Driving "energetically" with all the above.
Not being knowledgeable about your car's capabilities and needs.
Thinking you don't need to build your car, so the build is not considered until the boom actually happens.

well said madam

My friend blow his speed 6 up because of a fuel pump but every thing else she told you already and somebody said something about boosting under 3k on the forums somewhere.

Jeez, just do the math, there's 10,000 Speeds a year in the US, There are ~30 "registered" blowups on that other Mazda site, FROM ALL CAUSES, That's 1 in 1000 from every kind of idiocy this car is heir to.

I think NASIOC has over 80 blowups recorded on their site for just the 08 Gen WRX.

Sucks to be one of the 1 in a thousand but, the chances of you blowing up are pretty slight, especially if you're somewhat smart about how you do things.

i was just going to post about how only people that blow up their motors come online to talk about it. but u worded it much better than i could have lol

Number one reason for killing engines...

It's all a matter of Timing...

Having INTENTIONALLY killed 5 (that's right FIVE) 1.6 liter crate motors, fresh from Mazda Motorsports, while developing the Super Spec Miata specifications, I can tell you without a doubt the number one killer of engines is TOO MUCH TIMING under load. Guaranteed detonation!
Blows the ring lands to pieces everytime.
The number TWO cause- running out of fuel under boost- grenades spark plug insulators which chew up cylinders and valves seats.
Yes we did all this on purpose to "find" the limits of reliability. Absolutely abused these motors and am thoroughly impressed with just how much they tolerate

It work out good for my friend with the speed 6 and now he got a pg motor and all bolt ons with a gt35 turbo and soon to be tuned.

speed 6's alreant slow at all! try having a full bolt on msp with a map tune and still getting ***** from a 60 punch on the highway! lol

i kno there not slow.. their just not crazy fast. i got destroyed by a rs4 yesterday, made me really sad lol

lol i was just ****** because i know who he is talkin about and we all bust on eachother all the time. The MS3 still has more of an advantage over the MS6 when it comes to speed because of the drivetrainloss/weight factors. The motor is capable of the same no matter what, but the MS3 will outrun the 6 unless the 6 is the nastiest mother on the planet.

im still waiting to see the outcome of Ivan's motor build(the guy speedkid is talking about), he has a PG built block, ported head with valves/etc. and going for either the PG v3 mani or the CP mani that is also out, knowing him he will get both and **** with both of them for a while. also will be running a Devils own stg2 meth kit and possibly a 4 gal tank with a 4 gal reservoir. gonna be a decent setup, with P3 doing the tune and meth install. hes got all supporting mods to go with it all so we will see, but im still gonna walk him in the end, as well as speedkid so its all good :)

homegrown tuning FTW

Audi rs4 4= 420 hp v8......hp to weight ratio- 8.6 lb to 1 hp very freakin good...also they msrp for 70 grand.....so its gonna spank alot of cars haha..and the 25000 dollar speed 3 holds it own pretty daym good ;)

My 2 cents....

I thought I would add my 2 cents worth. I am a new owner of a 2009 MSP3.

However, I am a long time owner of many performance cars. (Ole dude = OLD dude) My first turbo was a new 1964 Corvair,. (I said OLD!) Presently, my other car is a 2003 Mustang Mach 1 setup for road track, full suspension mods, etc, with a few good ones between those cars.

The point is nearly every car I owned with even moderate performance all had some issue with engine related failures.

The Corvair would blow head gaskets often. The Mach 1 has more than one tick, clicks, and a reputation for going boom on occasion.

I believe there are two points. One, as stated here, a lot of the issues come from poor planning and / or poor modifications, helped along by the driver in some cases.

Secondly, our engine is power dense, probably in its stock form fairly close to the limit of reliability. Any mod other than simple intake, perhaps exhaust mods, I believe, requires serious consideration of internals.

With a proper build, the engine is likely as reliable as most high performance engines producing the same power to displacement.

The MSP3 is easy to over rev and seems like it might be a weak point. It just requires a close eye to your driving.

My new MSP3 will visit the local road track mid-September, in full stock form. If all goes well she may replace the Mach 1 as the track car.
