Comments on these tires

They're ok, but there are many complaints about longevity and softness, like a marshmallow. Not performance-oriented tires at all. Same complaint for their summer tires, too soft for most people.

I have the Nexen N3000 right now. According to my experience, they aren't that good in the rain. I need to rotate them however, but I'm also looking for some good quality, cheap priced tires.

I bought Bridgestone Potenza 019 Grids and love them. They are not as good as the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3s that were taken off, but they are defiantly worth the cost. Entry speeds in on/off ramp corners is barely noticeable (225% vs. the recommended caution speed is what I have tested) and they are quiet on the road. That means if the caution sign says 50 km/hr, I'd do it at 112.5km/hr. The F1 GS-D3s were awesome but very expensive at almost $300 CDN/tire including tax. I got the grids for less than $700 installed.

I punished the Goodyear's to no avail, I never had the tires beg for forgiveness even with less than 10% tread left (keep in mind that the Bridgestone's are new so they may/will dissolve performance over time). The new 'stones are 195/55/16 vs. the F1's 205/50/16.

I haven't tried the other tires you mentioned, but the 'stones are definitely worth the $$ IMO.

Good to hear about the Grids. I'm look at those for my next set of tires for the MSP. I wouldnt think you can really compare the two in grid head on due to the two completely different tire sizes.

No, I just have too much free time at work... I don't have 10% of the knowledge a lot of the guys on here have.

But, I have Toyo Proxes4 on my Protege. Tried out Kuhmo Ecsta ASX's as my last tire and was completely unsatisfied with them. They were fine (nothing special) on dry pavement, but they were s*** in the rain. They would squeal a little even when not taking corners fast AT ALL. Just didn't like them... The Toyo's on the other hand, unless its like hurricane conditions I really don't notice a huge drop off in traction and grip. Braking grip especially is really good witht he Proxes4's wet and dry. Only pluses the Kuhmos have in their favor is the ASX's are like $5 cheaper per tire (the AST's are like $10 cheaper per tire) and they have a slightly higher treadwear rating which proably equates to less than 5k miles total on the life of the tires. (thats a complete guess haha) But performance wise, the Proxes4's blow them out of the water.

So that's my .02

you liked the proxies.... man i will never buy another set of those... they turned my old p5 to a death trap on wet roads...

Edit: I didnt even get 20k miles out of my proxies to.... def not worth the investment.

had the kuhmo ecsta ASX's before and they were the shittiest tire in the world, i absolutley hated them, but i had a diff model (cant recall the name) of ecsta's and they were pretty good, im lookin at tires right now and im going with the goodyear eagle gt, they have a pretty high tread wear, and my girlfriends dad gets 40% off all good year tires lol

oh and i have the federal s95's on my 17's and i hate those too, they are good tires and they grip well and are ok in the wet but they just wear so unevenly its ridiculus, i got aligned and they still wear unevenly and they make my car wander all over the road when i take my hand off the wheel
maybe just bad expierience tho, others say federals are pretty good

I'm running these too. Haven't had anything but good in all areas. First set I ran lasted about 40k & 2 were still good enough to keep for throw down spare road hazard bkups. They aren't the quietest but other than that I really like them. They are nice balance of performance/longevity/price. Got 4 to the porch for 210.00 brand new. Have run sumitomos & wan li's also. Sumitomos were nice until lowering the car, they were 205/45/17s & they rubbed a bit. The wan li's were straight up track tires, stuck like chuck but uncomfortable for daily commuting & low treadwear rating. Got a stack of fresh Nexens to go on after the current set gives up. Seems it'll be awhile but that's OK. And here we are pushin 90k.........

Well, seems that many people get completely opposite results from the same tires. So obviously a lot of it is personal preference. That or the tire companies have no consistency in their manufacturing or maybe we are all bat s*** crazy and imagine whatever the **** we want to about our tires :D:D:D

OTN, my next set of tires will probably by Yokohamas. I have heard good things about their summer and all season tires and want to try them out.

Also something of importance... Tread wear is not consistant car to car due to many factors. Alignments' quality can vary from shop to shop. I know that Tire discounters has given me a couple bad alignments before, and I will not be back at that location ever again. That and if you run with any type of negative camber your tires will perform much better and grip better but at the cost of your treadwear. Underinflated tires will also decrease your gas mileage and also wear unevenly causing them to lose tread more quickly. Also, make sure they are rotated every 5k.

The owner of my car before me put on new dunlops (the stock tire brand).

I'm not much for performance. My main concerns are:
Life of the tire
Less noise/more luxury
and price :) Cheaper the better!

Whats a tire that has better life, less noise, and is cheaper than the dunlops?

and, just for comparison, whats the best 'bang for your buck' tire that emphasizes the features I mentioned?

Other than the rain factor, I can't really complain about the Nexen's. They came with the car when I bought it from the dealer. They haven't been rotated either so maybe that's why I'm not getting much traction in the rain. I might buy another set of these.

Yeah, I rotate them every 5k with oil changes. Have had good action even pretty worn past 30k in heavy rains. They wore very evenly. Never been near hydroplaning even without timid driving habits. I have sport auto so initial takeoff spin less likely I suppose. I think they are under the name Lexani now. It's just the company who was making them now is putting their name on them from what I found in my search for extra sets. Lexani N3000...IIRC

Good points, The proxies I had wore evenly but just didnt last upro the 40 or 50k warrenty on them. Plus the tires were rotated every 3k. Its just easier to rotate them every oil change.

No you will not get 50k out of proxes4's... IIRC they have a treadwear rating of 330. Don't buy Toyos if you are trying to save money. Buy Toyos if you want a quiet ride and superb all-season grip.

You should be able to get at least 35k (if not 40k) out of the Proxes4 tho. And I don't think the Proxes4 comes with a warranty. Just the 25% treadware free replacement deal.

Yeah, the N3000's I'm runnin have 340 treadwear & pretty much after 30k you should start thinkin about the next set. I squoze 35k from the last set but that's just because I had a fresh stack sittin in the garage & I wanted to see how far they'd go & still be of use. They were still great, just louder as the tread wore down.

Just run em til they're bald :D:D:D Then tell the ricers they're your racing slicks. (bike)

Really? I was under the impression that the Proxes4 had a reasonably stiff sidewall. I've read good reviews, and from the comparisons, the Proxes4 have a good load rating (88) compared to the Kumho's (84) and the stock Dunlop (84).

As long as they're as stiff (or stiffer) than the stock Dunlop I'll be happy. I rarely take crazy fast corners.
