Looking to make a decent upgrade but still a little concerned about the increase of power and the effect it will have on my car. Is an external wastegate going to be needed / necessary? Do you guys see any problems I may encounter or should look out for.

I would get an External wastegate . You will start to experience some boost creep with out. TiaL makes good ones. I would try to follw Yoichi's build thread on the M a z d a Sp e e d F o r u m s . o r g

I would not get an external wastegate unless you are getting a bigger turbo. I have not heard of boost creep in these cars on stock turbos.

Yeah thats what I've been hearing, but the stock tranny and clutch shouldnt have any problems? Its my daily driver but I dont gun it front light to light. When I hit up circuits or drags thats different. I dont plan on getting a BIGGER turbo... I just wasnt sure about the stock internals and what I could and shouldnt do.

Boost creep is possible with this stock turbo. With all the breather mods and now a upgraded manifold...it will most likely happen.

Boost creep is rising boost due to not enough exhaust bypassing the housing. For example, you're set for 15 psi, and when you floor it, you get a quick rise to 15 or 16 psi. But then as rpm's climb, the boost creeps higher and higher: 16, 17, 18, 19, etc. Enlargening the wastegate hole is one cure for boost creep.

The boost creeps higher at high rpm's because there's too much exhaust flow for the wastegate hole to bypass.
