Rear caliper seized

Thank you Clarkbug! I tried that a little bit, but not much success. Will try harder. Again, much appreciation for your time and effort.

Sure, no problem.

Just be aware that if your rear brake is "stuck on" and you are getting a smoking wheel, its probably NOT your slides. The stuck slides will result in your wearing out of your inner brake pad, and not the outer pad. Since these calipers "float" on the pins, when you press the pedal (or pull the ebrake) the inner pad gets pushed in by the caliper piston, but that force clamps the outer pad to the rotor as well.

When your piston wont float anymore, the outer pad will not engage, or at least not as readily. All of your rear braking force will come from your inner pad, which will wear quicker.

"stuck" calipers usually result from the piston boot getting a hole in it, causing rust and/or grit to get in there and mess with its operation.

Also, before you tried to move your caliper on the pins, did you retract the piston with an allen wrench?

I have a similar situation with a driver rear caliper seized.

I removed the parking break clip, the screw plug and the lock bolt. I used a 4mm allen to try to decompress the piston, and while the gear moved (and stopped), when it came out, it was mangled.

I have the caliper all the way off now, and I can move the piston as if I were applying the break, but when I try to depress it, it only goes a few mm and then seems to click to a stop. I don't want to force it because it feels like something is definitely holding it where it stops.

Any advice? I'm going to (try to) take it to a local place, but my hopes are not high for a fix vs. replace.

Oh man, that doesn't look pretty!

I have a similar issue as this. I was changing my rear brake pads and I couldn't get the piston to retract. The gear won't even turn on the passenger side rear. The driver's side was fine. Just put new pads on the driver's side one and left the old ones on the passenger side. I guess i'll replace the passenger side caliper unless someone else has another thing to try.

So I took my caliper to the local mechanic and he was able to screw the piston back down to nearly flush with the housing using an adjustable wrench. Not that it mattered, if it doesn't slide on the hinge the caliper is jacked.

Give it a shot - it looked like a PITA.

any guides how to remove and install new guide pins? my rear passenger pin is stuck, took off the top guide pin, but the bottom is closed shut with no way of removing the pin, any tips?

it's been a while, but isn't that the one where you slide off part of the caliper first and then the top of the pin is exposed? I think the procedure is described in the service manual.

had to take a sledge hammer to the caliper to get the bracket off, replaced the sliding pins, got everything installed and greased up
