Valet Key

Hey I just picked up a "new" 2006 mazda5 and I noticed that the car didn't come with a Valet Key, normally I don't care if I have one but since the alarm is attached to the key I'm trying to find a solution for when I go river and such during the summer and I have to bring my key with me.

Is the car suppose to have a valet key or some sort of key without the alarm fob? The sales guy says no but I'm surprised the guy even knows the mazda5 had 3 rows of seats.

Thanks all

No valet keys. Usually the purpose of a valet key is so the valet can't get into the trunk... which is obviously not gonna help with the 5 anyways ;)

But no, unfortunately, I don't think any waterproof key is available for the 5.

I only skimmed through, but it looks like you can get a non-programmed key cut to just open and lock the doors, then keep a programmed key hidden inside your car while you're out. The "dumb" key will be able to open the doors, but you need the "smart" key to fire the engine.

vans/wagons that do have valet keys normally have the valet key unable to lock/unlock the glovebox

Oh..i had the same problem, because i surf and need to take my key with me into the water....i just went to home depot and made a copy of the flip key, it can open the doors but wont start the car...so i just leave the flip key in the car somewhere and take the copy....it was the cheapest solution...heheh

On my Maxima, I had a simple key cut just for that purpose - in case I got locked out. It's in a magnetic holder in a secret location. Can't start the car - the key is chipped.

Just bought the chip-containing non-fob key part mentioned above, had it cut, and programmed it myself - all for $28.

i know this has nothing to do with a valet key,but i can tell you i went swimming this last summer and forgot to take my key of my pocket and i was in the pool for about an hour or so and then i realized that i had the key stiil in my pocket i got out and my key worked like nothing happened.

I have gone diving accidentally with the key and it still worked when I got back to the car. THis was after many hours in the water. I realized I had the key with me AFTER I got out of the water.

Won't do it again though. (rlaugh)

Is this just the standard key (the one that slides into the fob), or is this a different, stand-alone key?

Full key, not just the shaft that attaches to the fob, just insert into drivers door lock and turn to unlock (like the olden days:)

I have had the same thing happen. Went Kayaking with the key in my pocket and dumped several times and the key still worked. Not sure I would COUNT on them being water proof but I sure was lucky/thankful!

I did something similar - worked like a charm! The instructions on how to program the key can be found in this forum - if you need help finding it - let me know.

Yep - took the flip key to Ace Hardware - had them cut a copy for just a few bucks and I put a carabiner clip on it so I can attach it take it sailing, mountain biking, swimming, etc, and leave the fob key locked in the car.
As others have said, the cut key will not start the car, buy it will get you in to get the real key.

If you buy the full key with chip inside, it starts the car just fine. I personally drive the 5 infrequently (it's the wife's). I like to have a 5 key on my keychain to drive it when I need to - without the bulk of the extra fob.

Only one Key

I just bought a 2008 5 and it came with only one key. Where can I get a transponder key for a decent price and program it? I've been doing some research and it seems that I need two keys to program a new one.

Thanks in advance!

I've been looking into this myself. You need to buy the key, the transponder (fob), and an optional key ring.

The prices at this place are as follows:

http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=214264

CC43675RYC, $141.36 transponder
G2YA762GXB, $39.01 blank key for transponder, with chip
KRTT09001, $0.49 key ring

So... cost for a key with transponder (with key ring) = $180.86 with free shipping since it is over $125 (US only).

and if you want a third key without a transponder:
F1Y1762GX, $22.58 blank key with chip (does not fit into transponder)

They will cut the keys for you, just give them the VIN. If you have two keys and two transponders you can program both the chips and the transponders yourself.

I will be doing this within a day or two - I want a third transponder / key as well as a standalone key for my keychain so I don't have the fob in my pocket all of the time.

OK, since you only have one transponder / key, you are basically screwed and not in a good way. You have to go to the dealer though call three or four different ones, they may charge different rates. My local dealer quoted me a price of $80 to program the transponder if I only had one transponder, free if I had two. I don't know what they charge to program a key's chip, maybe it's included?

Then there is always the ebay route though it's more of a gamble.
