Help canadian P5 owners

No, alot of Ontario owners (and I'm sure other provinces too) don't have block heaters installed and wonder why they don't.

Is that the same for all new Mazda's sold in Canada? One would expect Mazda Canada to be able to offer block heaters if they can offer day time running lights I suppose (not looking for trouble here ), but imagine how much in costs it would potentially save them in warranty claims because of long term cold cranking damage.

Dream on, it comes down to dollars and cents. Block heater say 30bucks a pop times number of cars sold = mucho dinero. Manufacturers are all about building for less.DRLs are mandated by law in Canada so they don't have a choice.

I had a block heater installed this fall (Oct 2008) by the dealer in my 2003 P5. The install ran me about 125 bucks but they had the parts on hand and it was done in a morning.

I just checked the Mazda dealer here, you were lucky block heater no longer available for the Protege 2 liter engine, and that includes aftermarket.

alot of the time too they say it doesnt have a block heater, and when you go to the car it happens to have one, they just never put it into there system or computers..... so always double check.

Block Heater

If you don't have a 110volt plug at the front of the car you don't have a block heater. This is a FYI for Canadian P5 owners looking for a block heater. The oem style block heater is not available from anybody, however Parts Source carries an inline heater that installs in the bottom rad hose. The size you need for the P5 is inch and one eigth, inch and one quarter is too big.

The heater itself is located in the frost plug on the back of cylinder #1. From under the rear look up and to the right of your oil filter. It's an orange rubber plug. The cord should come around front under your battery. If u don't have one any junkyard could hook you up for cheap.

And the block heater is also no longer available. I have one and love it on those really cold nights, although I have to say that I used it a lot more when I lived north of Timmins.

They may not be totally necessary, but they sure are nice to have.

I went to My local mazda dealer (Timmins Mazda) last fall and had one installed for $150 Parts and labour. It started leaking coolant/antifreeze a month ago and I took it in and it was repaired for free. It just needed to be tightened. You can definitely get one installed. I run mobil 1 Synthetic and It starts fine with or with out even in the 40 below C weather we've been having. (The Eliminator battery helps too!)
