if the car is running you wont be able to lock it with the card. FYI i got a key card from ebay for about $70, works fine and a blank valet key will run you about 50 at the dealer
The auto-lock thing has to be programmed to operate by the dealer. Mine is not set up and I'm not planning to bother with it. I like the door button just fine, and I can be sure it locks.
i think it was around 250 for a new card and valet key plus dealer programming when I had to replace mine...
They dont have to program the key thats total BS my dealer tried telling me that too but the car will turn over with just the card and no vallet key or with the valet key and no card. They are totaly trying to rob u and the cost out here in CT i think was 85 bucks for a new card and key

You don't need both keys to run the car, but most people like having both for the convenience and peace of mind of having a manual backup if their advanced card dies for whatever reason. Both keys do have to be programed however. Get in your car and try to start it with the wrong advanced card and you'll get a whole lot of nothing. It's even worse if you try to start a modern car with a standard metal key (like the valet key) that hasn't been programed. The car will shut down the fuel system as a security measure and you generally play hell getting it started again with a programed key or the advanced key.
The valet key dose not need to be programed! however, the card key dose. so if you just need a valet key you shouldent have to pay for "programing"
The programming I was talking about was for a new card and you replied that having to program a new card is BS. I think myriad was just reinforcing what I said and not trying to say you need to program a valet key. With the advanced keyless entry the valet key is in the card and pulls out. It doesn't have any lock or unlock functions or programming chips
Yes, I was backing up your point, but I was also stating that the valet key does in fact need to be programed. Modern cars have a passive security system built right into the wiring... it is commonly referred to as an immoblizer system which disables your fuel system. On the sports with the flip out keys there is an embedded chip (separate from any keyless circuitry in the fob part) that is scanned whenever you put in your key and start the car. If you start the car without a key that was programmed for your car (actually by your car) the car will not receive the code it is looking for and disable your fuel system. That chip is also in the valet keys for the sports as well as the GTs (as is the passive security system). You don't have to pay your dealer to program your valet key for you, but you do have to have 2 (that's right, 2) programmed keys for your car to be able to program it yourself. Most people that need to program a new valet key on the GTs are doing it because they are replacing a missing key and therefore don't have the 2 keys needed to do it themselves. That's why most people end up having to have their keys programmed at the dealer because mazda (or really any manufacturer for that matter) has to pull up your vin and run it through whatever machine it is that does the same thing as your car when it programs a new key. You can google the tech page for directions on how to program the keys for this car yourself. If anybody still doubts the fact there is a chip in the valet key, you are more than welcome to stop by your local locksmith shop and have him cut a standard metal blank to match your valet key and give it a try for yourself. I'm fairly sure he would do it just to get a quick chuckle as he watches your car sputters out faster than you can spit out a string of obscenities. The programming I was talking about was for a new card and you replied that having to program a new card is BS.
