would taking the stock muffler and having custom 3" pipe fit to it pretty much be the same as a Mazda speed CBE? i wanna do my exhaust next, but ive been pulled over for the stocker for being to loud. i originally wanted the HKS, but after that incident idk if that would be a smart idea. Im sure i could have the pipe made cheaper then buying the Mazda for 600 bucks.

Are you trying to increase power? Won't work that way. The stock muffler is not very restrictive at all and will flow over 300 wheel hp easily, all the flow the turbo can put out. Same with the stock cat-back pipes. But going to 3 inch pipes from the cat back whether with a complete cat back or with custom pipes and the original muffler is not going to increase your power. Deleting the resos will really make it loud and will make it drone badly at 2500 rpm. Resos and muffler are straight through design to begin with. There are to many dyno runs here showing that cat backs don't do anything but change the sound of your exhaust, unless you are going to go to a bigger turbo and custom ECU tune.

The stock exhaust restriction is upstream, not in the catback system. You will not see any meaningful gain unless you replace the downpipe coming off the turbo (which also has the first cat) and the mid pipe, with the second cat. These two pieces produce huge restrictions. You can go catted or catless, depending on whether your state requires sniff test.

3 inch DP/RP with or without high flow cats will drop your 60-100 mph times a full second -- huge gains "above the curve" all the way through the power band, especially midrange. There really isn't much way to improve 0-60 times in these cars, since the ECU cuts power in first and second gear, except to put much stickier tires on the front, preferably street drag radials.

For a daily driver, the best bang for the buck is the DP/RP combo from the mfg of your choice.

hm... thanks for the info. I already have a RP, so i guess DP will be next, but think i wanna wait for the warranty to go first. im only at 19k so ive got some time to go. maybe save up for some others. Thanks

everyone i have herd doin this mod on the car you start gettin the dreaded turbo smoke, i wouls do it while u still had the warntee lol so when it starts smokeing u can get a turbo replaced mind after u return it back to stock

Not so. Have you done the mod yourself or are you just reading other posts? No significant smoke with my mod. There is the same particulate emission as in pre-cat cars back in the '60's, that's all. I've gone through a full oil change mileage cycle since the DP/RP install. Oil on the dipstick is ALWAYS NORMAL - NOT AN OUNCE OF LOSS.

Hmmm the only reason I didn't go that route was due to the seal prob wow I'm might have to rethink this

My Cobb TBE surprized my by how quiet it is, it sounds very close to stock until you spool the turbo and get on it, then it has a very deep rumble much like an Sti. The speedo needle also hauls ass past 80 mph now, much harder pull up top. If you dont mind spending the extra $150 or so for the Cobb, its worth every penny IMO.
