Ms3 Mpg

:
MSP & MS3
I've only had mine for a couple weeks now and am I bit disappointed with my 20.9 avg. Especially considering I'm drivin it like an old lady.

I'm hopin the Injen CAI I've yet to install will make a difference.

So for those with a trip computer... what's everyone averaging?

if you're judging mpg based on the on board stats and it's telling you 20.9, chances are it's actually closer to 19-20. sorry to inform you.

i get closer to 24-25 around here. its really pretty dependent on where you drive tho, because when im up at school i do a lot more stop-and-go, and it drops 2-3 mpg.

edit: those figures are based on miles driven / gallons used between fill ups, not the trip computer just to make it clear.

for comparison sake... let's just go by what the trip computer says? Even if it's inaccurate, at least we're all comparing the same thing.

^^yes, but who says your trip computer is as off as my trip computer or vice versa. And what about those people who do not have the trip computer (I am one of those people). For comparison, you should go w/ the most accurate, which would be, mileage/gallons put in.

i get between 120-130m per half a tank. i have never exceeded 130miles to a half a tank since owning the car. it has 6k miles on it now

trip comp would generally be in the 26's for me around town here, 23 and change when im in binghamton. thats driving relatively conservatively and shortshifting in most cases and opening it up whenever i get some open road.

I have to believe all of these trip computers calculate the mileage the same way. As for those who do not have a trip computer... they can make their own thread! haha

as far as what's most accurate... technically speaking, you're right. But am I really to trust that someone is going to accurately divide the mileage they obtained by the amount of gallons they put in? Besides, who's to say the gas pump isn't 'ticking' at the same spot it did last time? There's simply too many variables.

I'm trying to eliminate as many variables as possible. Assuming all trip computers are created equal... Even if they are indeed inaccurate... comparing the 'avg mpg' it displays should at least provide some valuable insight.

I find that my trip computer will relay the exact avg MPG all the time. For a while, no matter when or how I drove, it always said 23.3mpg. So I reset it and started fresh, and it got stuck on a number for a while. I don't know if this was or has anything to do with the Bose radio replacement or not. But I noticed it before and after the exchange.

s***... how the hell are you guys getting such high gas mileage?

granted... it's like 10 below here so... yeah, that might be a factor lol

All I know is... 20mpg combined for a 4 banger (turbo or not) is absurd. Especially considering how I'm driving it.

Mine's fixed hard at 22MPG no matter how I drive (hand calculated method). I could give a flying **** though. I love driving this thing!

it's cold, and fuels are winter mixes. i went from about 23-24 to 19-20...no different driving habits, no different routes. and that was just this summer to now.

wait for warmer weather, it will get better

honestly.

unless they are very conservative with the gas pedal, i cant see averaging more than 20-21mpg with this car. i accel fairly hard a few times while im out drive each time im out to hear my turbo and bov but im never pounding the car regularly nor launching

as said, i average between 115-130 per half a tank. which is a correction from what i originally stated. i said between 120-130 before

i took my car in to the dealer for this exact reason b/c i felt my MPG was low. but this car just doesnt get good gas mileage since its a turbo and you want to play with it

mpg isnt bad but its not good

Keep it out of boost, shift around 2k, etc. my ex was awesome at driving standard conservatively. She could always get way more mpg than I could. (in a miata)

at the moment I am averaging 26.5-27.0 mpg In the summer I was averaging about 27.4 mpg. That is calculated by hand. Trip computer seems to be about 0.2 higher. I do 84+ miles a day, 80 of which are highway. I almost always use cruise control and set it at 65, or between 65 and 70. I shift low, 2500-2800, and always cruise in the highest gear that is practical for my speed. Usually fill up with 93 or 91. Usually buy my gas from shell, hess, or there are two good no name gas places down the street from me. Keep the tires inflated to about 38 psi.

One thing that has helped me is keeping the trip computer on while i drive. I set it to display current mpg. While it might not always be accurate, it does give you a good idea of where you get the best efficiency, and how different driving affects your mpg. Its an easy way to find what speed will give you the best mpg in each gear.

The car is also red... which clearly helps. :D

No trip computer here. I drive with A/C on most of the time, and Florida mandates 10% ethanol blend, which hurts fuel economy.

I track my mileage on www.fueleconomy.gov which also lets me jot down notes about my driving style, etc. Worst I have gotten is about 20.7 on a mostly city driving, stop & go tankful. Best I got was 24.9 on a tankful that was 90% highway. Recently, I drove one tank granny style (or close to it) with almost no A/C usage, just to see how my mileage would fare. Typical commute week is 70/30 highway/city It was 24.3mpg in the end. I would imagine a pure road trip, highway tankful should break 25mpg. My overall average is 23mpg.

I know it sounds crazy, but I get at least 29mpg avg. Also, go faster and see what your mileage is. I do a 130 mile trip twice a week from the DC area to the Petersburg area. If traffic is flowing at 80mph, I get better mileage. I also reset my trip computer every time I fill up, and mpg/avg speed are reset when I get on the Interstate.

I did get an actual miles versus gallons used reading of 31.7 once on a trip to MA from VA. Avg speed via trip computer was 78mph, Amb. Temp was approx 63 deg.
