Am I Crazy

:
2001 Mazda MP3
Ok, i should be getting a good tax return and selling some stuff. Right now i have a CS MP(installed) and DP(unistalled) and intake on the way. I want to get a tuning solution soon, before i install DP.

I thought i was set on getting the cobb AP so i would have to cut any wires.

But the more i read and think, I'm leaning towards the full CP-E setup, plug in play harness, full throttle control, and what not.

I know its almost twice as much, but if i understand correct the CP-E allows the user to tune their selves.

I figured if cobb was to EVER release their pro tune software that the price wold be about the same for each. I just don't like the idea of running a tune that was set in California at low elevation and have it run it VA at a LOT higher elevation..

So i'm a crazy for wanting to spend 1300 for my next mod?

Depends on how much money /time your going to invest. CPE is definately better and more versatile but it is more expensive and will be harder to operate / take more time.

I dont have a COBB AP but the problem ive seen here on the forums is the lack of map versatility. You drive a nearly stock speed 3 so if I were you I would look at the COBB maps and buy the mods following those maps.

COBB AP is super easy to install and seems to work well when run with the properly configured setup / mods.

i just don't like the option to fine tune it. Plus i can go as "big" as i want to in the future and not have to upgrade to a different EMS later. But i "may" still go with the cobb due to price. and get a couple other mods.

ok, talked myself out of the stand back... I don't think i'll be going much above bolts ons for a WHILE... so AP its gonna be

if you just get the standback and the PnP harness, its only like $900.....you could just hold off on the full control flash for now and still get the rest of the CP-E engine management stuff. From everything I've heard, it may at least be worth the extra $300 over the AP since you can do so much more with it.

I plan on getting the CP-E standback and PnP harness soon, but I won't be getting the full control flash until I master the art of tuning a little bit better. You could go the same route :) And IF you ever plan on doing bigger mods to your car, you won't have to upgrade to better engine management later on since you'll already have the best there is. I'd say get just the CP-E standback and PnP harness. Hold off on the full control flash for now.

the thing is its the full control that really impresses me the most...

The full control flash is a nice product :)

Yeah, I understand. The AP is good for basic stuff, and like you said, you can always sell it later if you decide to upgrade. However, if you're going with the COBB AP I would definitely recommend sticking with mostly their products for your bolt-on upgrades since that will be the easiest to find maps for.

You really can't go wrong either way....both are great products. Let me know what you end up doing!

Yep and as stated you can resell the AP easily. Your lucky your just starting to mod so you can follow the AP maps.

Me on the other hand . . . im stuck with my mods and my new CPE front mount in the mail. Next step is a tune but cobb ap doesnt seem like a good option.

Congrats on the CP-E FMIC....that will be one of my mods at some point, too. Its a nice piece. Do you plan on purchasing the CP-E standback and PnP harness?

Not crazy at all. If time/money is no issue and you want to tune it yourself today, then by all means go the SB route as it sounds like what you want.

FYI - Cobb released the street tune software for free to the Subi guys. I would assume so for the Mazda as well (keep in mind that is an assumption on my part). Even if they did charge it would still roll in much cheaper than the total SB setup.

Pro-Tune will only be used by professional tuners.

The answer to this is simple. If you're going all out(even eventually). CP-E for the win ATM. If you aren't, go the AP route. BUT** If you go AP, make sure your mods fit the maps or you will have problems.

Yeah right now im thinking about the standback. Its expensive though so ill have to research the alternatives. I need a dashhawk really bad. Definately need to know what my engine is doing know that I have the front mount. Wish I could find a used one. I sold my GHL catback for the front mount :).
