Just thought I would chime in among the others who have cured their smoking issue with 5w-40 Motor oil... Mine smoked ever since the downpipe came on. Just got done switching to Shell Rotella 5w-40 and took it for a hard 5 minute run after it warmed up. Did a few WOT pulls in 3rd and 4th for same variables. (always smokes after idle when ran hard) It's been sitting here idling for about 5 minutes straight and everything is clean...

-On another note I never realized how much tranny fluid was necessary until had my car jacked up at an angle. Started it up and went to put it in reverse and it was pretty rough lol

WELL.... To my disbelief, upon idling another 2 minutes I got some huge white clouds, it almost seems like it's worse. **** me right ? Looks like next time its 10w-40

install yo downpipe speed3rookie!

lol...nope..I'm too scared of the smoking turbo issue.
In my neck of the woods we have to get inspected every year and if your car is emitting ANY smoke they will just wave you through...they won't even inspect it.
I'm not looking forward to installing and reinstalling my dp.
Really just want to find a direct replacement that's comparable to the stocker that won't smoke and doesn't need 1-2k in support parts to run it.

i bet you'd be fine! Downpipe is a big enough gain it's worth at least trying, trust me :)

Yeah...it's going on....who the hell do I think I'm fooling. :)

On topic:
scatt nasty, let us know how the 10w40 works out. I'm not smoking at the moment but I do use 5w40 also.

I will post results of the 10w-40 next change for sure. As for your emissions, you could possibly contact one of the DP manufacturers and see if a catted dp would keep you clear

I changed to 10w40 about 2 weeks ago and I have no more smoking issues anymore. I have some on cold days, but if you are out and about, you will notice every car has some smoke coming out of it when its cold...which is steam. But no, no more smoke bellowing from my car!! :)

I wonder if Castrol Snytec 5w50 would be too much for these cars.

In the summer, when these engines are doing the "little volcano" thing, the 5w50 might be OK...just thinking out loud. I've seen plenty of pictures of valve trains that have run this oil for many miles and the stuff keeps the innards clean.

Maybe a good last ditch effort.

When its warm which its seems to smoke more after its warm correct? 10-w40 wont help you anymore cause its still a 40 weight at opperating temps or thicker.

i've read that after a dp install a oil catch can will help eliminate smoking.

is this true? anyone tried this?

here is what is killing me...everyone is bitchin about smoke coming from the exhausts....does everyone forget that its a cold time of year and EVERY CAR ON THE ROAD is having smoke come from the tail pipes right now!?!?!?!

yes, but we're talking about smoke coming from execess oil getting into the exhuast track.. not what people see when it's cold... people in CA are having this issue.

see ive only noticed mine smoking some when its cold, when its warm i don't have a problem. And when its cold, the smoke coming from exhausts are white. I was paying attention to it tonight when was on our way home. Some cars around us had clouds of smoke coming out and it was white. I was like well s*** that looks just like the smoke everyone is complaining about. But I was having a lil smoke issues right before I changed my oil (i was over on my mileage and also was about 1-1/2 months past the due date on changing the oil. I went to the 10w40, and the car feels stronger and I don't have the smoke issue except when the car is cold and its cold outside. After car is warm...no issues.
