Noises from the Dash on the Mz5 Too?

I've been hearing mysterious noises from my '08 Mz5's front windshield area for the past several weeks when going over bumps at most any speed. After searching through the sites forums - I seemed to have run across a thread that discribes the situation completely - but it seems to be an Mz3 issue - nicknamed "cowl creak" - as the cowel is the part the seems to cause the issue - see lots of detail here: http://www.mazdas247.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123685785&highlight=cowl+creak

My question is: Does anyone else's Mz5 seem to have this noise? - there is a TSB for it, but as far as I know, it's for the Mz3 - not the Mz5 - but I'd love to be wrong. It can be hard enough for a dealer to reproduce a noise (my experience is they are real lazy when it comes to reproducing sounds) and then get them to do a TSB - but if it's not for this specific car - I'm afraid it will be an uphill battle - even though I'm thoroughly convinced this is the issue.

Thanks in Advance.

I have the noise as well. When i purchased last january i noticed it and i think it is mainly a result of cooler temperatures. once the heating winds up enough the noise goes away (expanding plastics etc. i think).
I'm due to go in for an oil change this week, so i'll see if i can have them look at it at the sames time.

I'll check the 3 forum for the TSB & take it with me.

I dont have a mazda 5 but I do have a Speed3 and I have really bad vibrations when coasting to a stop and then put it in 2nd gear and go again. Its so bad that the cd player skips all the time. Kind of annoying.

My 08 Mazda 5 makes the same noise in cold weather, I thought it was the wiper hitting the windshield (hear ya) .. it comes and goes, occurs only when I'm driving at certain speed. Thanks for bringing this up, I'll take a look at the cowl later then.

Try searching again, Im pretty sure Ive seen seen this issue in one of the posts. Something to do with a loose cowling. Yeah Im pretty sure since I only read the MZ5 posts.

(Yeah - I thought it might be the wipers too - as have some Mz3 owners too - it seems like the only familiar sound that sort of describes what seems to happen. That or sound of hard rain (very momentarily) or single pieces of sleet hitting the windshield or something. Anyway - people say it goes away when you fix the cowl issue.)

is that a common issue with Mazda5?

Seems real common on the Mz3; one of the reasons for this post was to see how many of us Mz5 owners have it too (some did come forward in the previous Mz3 posts - but since the thread was in Mz3 "territory" - I figured I'd try to see the reaction over here in Mz5 "turf."

My 08 makes it more often than my 06 when extremely cold...

All these minor issues and TSBs lead me to confirm that the last gen Mazdas don't like extreme temps (06 squeaky bushings when cold, 06 door latches that could freeze, 06-08 dash cracking noises when cold, 06-07 engine "stuttering" when cold...)

(sick)

I have the exact same problem on my 2008. It only started to happen when the cold weather hit, and seems to go away after driving around for awhile.

Does anyone know if this is something that can be fixed? I'm obviously still under the warranty, but I don't want it to be a waste of time if there is nothing that can be done.

Please let us know what happens at the dealer. Good Luck!

Seems there is a TSB on it for the Mz3 - but not officially for the Mz5, best I can tell.

Are we talking about a VERY irritating crackling-type sound? I noticed it on my '08 5 GT when it got cold, too. I'm on my 3rd visit to the dealer on mine. They determined it had something to do with the windshield. Mine seems to be more dependent on outside temps than whether the interior is warm or cold. It's not a HUGE deal, but it's like Chinese water torture, and a very CHEAP sound. I mean, I could buy a well-used American car for far less $$, and not have this type of issue (not that I would, but...)

I've already had some kind of holding clip removed from the windshield area that the dealer said was unnecessary after manufacture, but the noise continued (however, now it makes the noise in warmer temps, when before, it made the sound at lower temps). It's back now to have the windsheild re-sealed by a local glass place.

What do you guys think? Are we on the right track to solving this problem? I sure hope so, as I'm so totally in love with the car otherwise.

P.S. - Had an '06 5 Touring for 2 years, and NEVER had this issue.

EDITED: Just got off the phone w/my dealer. He said they had it resealed, and the noise was still there "a little bit". He said when they removed some kind of plastic liner & retainer clips, it stopped. So, they're going to order replacements for that, and they think that should solve my problem. Does that sound legit to any knowlegeable folks on the board?

Take a look in Mazda5 TSB resources thread. It should show you the area that the noise is coming from and you be able to download it to take to dealer. This work for me when i had the same problem. Hope this helps.

Wouldn't that be the TSB mentioned above for "cowl creak"? My dealer is talking about windshield trim/liner or something.

Also, while others have mentioned noises coming from around their windsheilds, I still don't know if theirs are the same type noise I'm getting. I couldn't find a good description of the noise itself from other posts.

Yeah, mine 'sounds' like it is coming from the windshield area too, but its kinda hard to tell. At first I was convinced it was some vibration from the wipers, but I ruled that out by turning them on. Now that the really cold weather is starting to hit up here in the great white north, it is starting to get annoying. I'm due for an oil change after xmas so will probably mention it to them at that time.

That TSB should take care of it. It does sometimes sound like it's coming from the windshield. It was the same noise when myself and alot of folks were getting at the time and the fix work. Hope this helps.
