Snow + stock tires

Don't even try. I almost died this morning...started braking (lightly no less) for a YELLOW light about 150 feet before the intersection...instantly had ABS going off, and didn't stop until I was nearly into the intersection (had to actually start turning right to avoid going into the intersection). I have snow tires and wheels, but the tires need to be mounted and balanced on the wheels, and I was going to wait until the weekend when I had a bit more extra cash to spend.

If you're going to attempt it...be VERY careful. Just a fair warning. This was in less than an inch of snow.

I just installed a set of goodyear eagle GT a/s tires for my trip north. Sounds like I made a good choice to not try going on the stock summer tires in low northern temps

Thats why I went with some nice Pirelli A/S tires, work great in the inch or so of slush we've had.

YEP! Thankfully I had last weekend off, because the car didn't move from Friday till Tuesday. I videotaped a drive down the street to pick up some food in the GTO with RE040's in the snow. Pretty funny to say the least. It was only within a couple of blocks, and I slid through each stop sign. I made up for it by doing donuts in the parking lot.

The car didn't sound too good when it started up in the cold after not being started for a few days lol. I don't think she was very happy with me.

Glad to hear you made it home okay Auto! Now, put it on the charge card and get those tires on!

55 Miles on glare ice Mon with newly installed Yoko Avid 4Ws hanled extrmly well especially considering last March storm on OE going home from the dealership, that yellow squiggle thing never wnt off, never hardly went on the other day. They may not be winter but they sure handle cold temps and what I have encountered so far. 60+ cars where spun out!

got some pirelli snow tires used cheap (well $400 shipped for slightly used snows I think is awesome). Going on this weekend.

I have some Blizzacks and crappy used wheels. Just need to get them mounted and balanced. Time and money have been an issue the past few days.

Definitely don't want to think about 5" of snow if this is how it does in <1"

they did the same thing to us in the MSP's. I never really had a car with summer only tires so i didnt know about not driving in snow. First time, slid all the way down the hill backwards on teh way home.

I have my stock tires on, so I'm hoping we don't get any snow this year. I can't really afford new tires, but at the same time, I can't really afford to be w/o a car or get into an accident. I may try and find some used all seasons just to get me through winter.

Not sure how much snow you guys get, but to anyone else with this idea in their heads, as I hear it often....

don't think of it as spending money on Winter tires. think of it as you are storing your summers for a few months so they last longer. Afterall, Summer tires are more $$$

The Cheapest Winter tire you can get is still better then any all season summer tire in snow.

And your life, or someone else's life is worth it.

Yeah, I fully agree with what you're saying. I've looked at the prices of my tires on the net and I'm like(nailbyt). We usually don't get much snow here in Louisville, and if we do it's usually around Jan/Feb. However, we just got a light dusting yesterday. Nothing stuck to the road, but it lighly coated anything metal. Looks like I'll be getting new tires sooner than I thought.

After getting about 3" of snow last night I can officially say it's night and day with the new tires (just a set of 16" Blizzaks). I was actually able to drive normally...turn, brake, and even accelerate! Car felt more in control...less sliding and "wiggle". Night and day.

I just ordered a set of Continental ContiExtremeContact for the stock wheels. Finding an a/s tire that I would be happy with was a pain in the butt. After reading alot of good things about these tires and how well they do in the snow I ordered them. To bad they don't come in the stock size. I had to order 225/45-18. The overall diameter is 25.9" vs the stock 25.7" diameter of the stock Bridgestones.

225/45 is going to buldge on the sidewalls. I seen a set of Eagle F1 a/s in that size and it looked sorta funny.

I adored my Winter Sport M3's last night. Nothing could hold the car back.

I have my story to tell -

Brand new 2008.5, got it in March 2008. Thought the snowy days were over so I wouldn't have to get snow tires right away. It started snowing while I was at the office, so I had to drive home in it. It was light, and on the road, there was about a half-inch of snow. I lightly tapped on the brakes to slow for a light and had the anti-lock brakes come on suddenly while heading straight towards some poor guy's Accord. Thankfully, there wasn't any cars to my left, and I was able to SLOWLY get into the left. I was surprised I missed him.

Thankfully, the freeway was better (had a 30 mile drive), but it was the slowest drive I've ever had (sans congestion).

This winter, I have a set of Dunlop Wintersport 3D on OEM 17" wheels. MUCH better. Well, except for all that crunching noise from the front.

SNOW plus STOCK tires = DEATH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Experienced it once and NEVVVVVVVVVVVVER again. Thats why there are beautiful Michelin X-ice Xi2's just sitting and begging to be installed once the temps hold steady around 30's.

You may as well install them? What are the temps out in VA? I got mine installed when temps were in the mid 30's. A few days it touched 45* but lately it's back down to 10-20*. I need to raise my tire pressure bad. Gas MPG has gone down the drain and I last checked, the tires were 33f/32r. They were 36f/35r.

I have had quite pleasant results with my new goodyear eagle GT all season tires. They gripped quite good on snow, slush and some ice even. I ran them 3500 miles round trip from florida to upstate NY through the mountains with no problems at all.
