New to the MSP, but not to boost =)

Hi all.

My little brother and I just finished picking up a Blue one today with 57k miles, and she is in EXCELLENT condition. She almost even smells brand new :)

Myself, one of my babies is a 93 RX-7 that I have owned for 10+yrs. Of course, she is not stock ;-) But needless to say, I'm not a noob to turbos. So everyone, please be as technical as possible as I want to make sure my little brother gets a great experience with it. I also want to learn more about the Protege in order to make sure we take the correct upgrade path.

I've been reading the forums for the past few hours. Basically learned that they boost 5-6lbs stock, and that they have a fuel cut at about 9 or 10lbs. And that some seem to have grenading LSDs.

Guess time for the questions for things I couldn't find. :)

1) Is there a specific production number amount that have the grenading LSDs?

2) Cost effective method to eliminate fuel cut?

3) Assuming I have sufficient fuel mods, how high a boost can internals and head gasket take?

4) Beyond fuel cut, what boost amount would require Injector and/or fuel pump upgrade?

5) Is boost creep a problem at a specific boost amount?

6) What boost does the stock turbo run out of breath?

7) Does anyone have a link to the entire vacuum/pressure hosing diagram? Or a linky to a downloadable version of the shop manual?

8) How many mods does it take to require an ECU upgrade?

8) What type of power gains is expected from a setup such as DP, MP, maybe CB (Unless everyone believes the MS catback is pretty decent), IC, ECU (if needed), Intake, hardpipes, & boost around 10 or so. From what I have been reading, I think a setup like this for the Protege might gain somewhere between 60-70fwhp

9) Best method of getting rid of that slight hesitation under 6000ish rpm?

Thanks!

3 and 6 are around 14psi i believe, the turbo could put out maybe 17 but thats it
2 JoeP Fuel Cut Defender

8 u dont really ever need an ecu upgrade, just a piggyback, SplitSecond Air/Fuel Controller is a good one i heard, and around 230whp
9) Split Second

#1 - Yeah, all of them. Mine snapped at 32k mi., and I wasn't hard on it. There's a broken LSD registry on here somewhere, I think by JDMSam.

#3 - It seems to be variable. A few have blown at stock boost, some at 8 psi, some at 10 psi or more. A few have run 12 psi or more for long periods and not popped, but only a few. If you're planning on upping the boost very much, I'd plan on forged internals. While you're in there you can address a potential problem with crank walk and make sure you're set up for consistent oil delivery under hard cornering.

You guys will enjoy the MSP though. I still love mine.

Wow. Basically all of em had the LSD issue, eh?

Good thing we have an extended warranty :D

I'm starting to think they are a bit fragile. IMHO, they look a lot better than the WRX or the SRT, but daum.

I noticed today it had a significant amount of wheel hop. Is this common or a failing bushing or other component?

just maintain it well and build right the first time, spend less in the long run that way, before i even do anything i will be forging, and piggybacking, then AFC, and what not, but im sure bolt ons shouldnt give you any problems.

a good place for upgrades and OEM parts is www.protegegarage.com

check them out

Im in the same boat as you, i just picked my MSP up about a month ago, Yellow with 67000km(like 50k miles). First thing i baught for it was the SS AFC. Its in the mail should be here today or tomorrow. And the AWR engine mounts. I got the Front and Back, i will prolly just install the front first and then take it for a drive. Next on the list is the CAI, SMIC+hardpipes and then take it from there. Are you going to upgrade step by step or just go all out right away?

why are the sides a Must? just the front one is not good enough?
I dont want the cabin to be vibrating like CRAZY!

Thanks guys!

Yeah, will be doing the upgrades bit by bit.

I was in that thead, but skimmed through the suspension section. LOL then I felt the wheel hop, but then forgot about the thread. First mod seems like its going to be the AWR motor mounts. Today we are putting new belts, plugs, and wires on it. The alt/water pump belt snapped last night. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come. :( Want to get all the reliability mods out of the way.

Does anyone have a linky to the vacuum routing diagram? I see the MSP has a lot of little solenoids like my RX-7, and want to start getting myself familiarized with how the entire system works.
