A sports car is more like the 240z, miata, rx7 tt, s2000, lotus elise...(rear drive, manual tranny, good handling, 2door...Doesnt mean the ms3 is slower or not a great car because its not a "true" sports car.

No, not quite true. The BMW M3 has baby seat hooks and is a car I would consider being more "sports car" than the MS3.

Everyone knows the M3 is a yuppie pose-mobile (peep)

I kid I kid. But it's pretty much a sedan thats been beefed up with sporting intentions. It it much more a sports car than the MS3 though.

The M3 is a beefed up 3-series. It's still not a sports car. Its entire basis is a sports sedan. That it is closer to being a sports car than the MS3 still doesn't mean it's a sports car.

Im just gonna blab for a minute bare with me.

Sports car: literal, a car for sports? racing, competing.
does sporty car=sports car?
Mazda 3= econo hatch
MS3 = sport econo hatch...sport econo hatch=sports car? why not?
I've pulled some quotes off some posts to comment on.
Our sports car mindset:
rear drive(fail)
manual tranny (check)
good handling (check)
2door(fail) (Jeep wrangler? a sports car?)
no roof(fail)
sporty' in appearance (Check)
provides a driving experience that will put a sh*t eating grin on your face.
(I often drive around with that grin)
A true "sports car" is built for speed...while sacraficing comfort and economy to reach these goals....(MS3 loses sunroof, auto seats, for structural integrity, weight, things like that)

I believe the MS3 meets about half the standards the members have posted.
"apple & oranges = fruits, just differrent kinds of fruits"
I like this, so it means the MS3 is a sports car(fruit), just one of the many kinds.
"To me it is a sports car, but just not in the traditional sense."
Again backs up the fruit thing
"10-second 4wd ford"
HA i've seen lots of those, so fast does make a car a sports car I guess.

Well this was mostly thinking aloud.
My opinion is that MS3 is a sports car
why would they make 2 Mazda 3 models? one is econ one is sporty
a.but is sporty a sports car? i think so

I think the best term for it is a sports compact, but crap...people may call a porche a sports car, and its compact...sports compact=sports car?(boom07)

crap my head hurts(doh) I dont even know what just happened

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sports_car

A car may be a sporting automobile without being a sports car. Performance modifications of regular, production cars, such as sport compacts, sports sedans, muscle cars, hot hatches and the like, generally are not considered sports cars, yet share traits common to sports cars. They are sometimes called "sports cars" for marketing purposes for increased advertising and promotional purposes.[3] Performance cars of all configurations are grouped as Sports and Grand tourer cars, or, occasionally, as performance cars.

- Guess this is just another way to look at it.

Maybe it's not a "sports car" but it is gay-friendly...

The 2-door is a coupe, not a sedan and it has baby seat hooks in the backseat. Of course, there is also the 4-door sedan version of the M3.

i don't understand why people are pulling out definitions and wikipedia s***. that doesn't mean s***. if i write an article for wikipedia saying that a sports car is a 5 door, 2.3L turbo, FWD car... is my definition valid?

obviously a sports car doesn't have a difinitive description. there are always exceptions to the 'rule'.

and M3's are used in racing sports all over the world.

wtf do babies have to do with sports cars?

sorry if i seem harsh. i'm tired. :)

end.

semi trucks are used in road racing too. Doesn't make the sports cars. :)

Leave the ricer comments to the ignoramous folks.... if you get all butt hurt because someone calls your wagon rice..maybe it is?

you missed the point of that statement. i am tired of people referencing Fast and the Furious when it comes to my rx7. rx7 in older people's minds = F&F. my wagon has no rice characteristics. there is no big ass exhaust, no wing, no suspension mods, and no out-of-place stickers/badges. it is just a good looking p5. i don't race it since it isn't fast and i don't present it as something it isn't. it is just my naturally aspirated family car.

No, it's not a sports car. It has quite a bit of performance and does many things well like fit 4 people and their groceries in the trunk but it's obviously compromised in ways that will never make it a true sports car. Stop throwing numbers around, the last time I checked, a great sports car isn't defined by what 1/4 mile times it can run, etc.

roger roger...

tell them to just (jerkit).... rx7's are hawt anyways...

I feel ya though... hehe... a select ignoramous fools call my speed a ricerburner, I just laugh at them and ask what they drive.... and turns out, majority of them don't have a car, or are a scrub who borrows their buddies car...lol (loser)

fo shizzi mang, i know the feelin. =)

this thread includes NUMEROUS wikipedia references now...

thread = FAIL

why the hell would i ever let someone tell me what my car is based off of what wikipedia says? wikipedia can be useful when looking for certain pieces of obscure info, but when did it become a staple of information sources for automotive topics? the people who wrote those articles probably have as much influence on the automotive industry as i do... and i'll give you one guess on how much influence on it i have.

So are Honda Civics. So are S4s and S6s. So are 4 door Volvo wagons. So are all kinds of cars. Tracking a car doesn't make it a sports car. Jesus Christ, people.

My comment about the baby seat hooks wasn't intended to be a literal definition of what a sports car is. Rather, it was a joke to illustrate a point. You cannot take a car that comes from family wagon roots, add stiffer suspension, strut tower bars, and 100 HP, and call it a sports car. That is dumb. Everyone here knows for a fact when they see a sports car. You're driving around and you see a Corvette or an RX-8 or an NSX or a Miata or an S2000, you know exactly what it is. If you have to sit there and think about it because you're not sure, it probably doesn't qualify, and a 5 seater hatchback you can haul a 42" flat screen with doesn't god damn well qualify. It's fast and sporty and handles well, but it's not purpose built from the ground up to provide a sports car driving experience.
