why not a poll as to whether you prefer our car be called a hatch-back or a wagon....now that'd be something to consider...lol =\

The only thing this thread lacks is a pic of cute puppies.

my girlfriend calls shopping carts "wagons"

i could never do my car the injustice of calling it the same.

chevy celebrity wagon, buick roadmaster wagon.... THOSE are wagons.

Everyone here knows for a fact when they see a sports car. You're driving around and you see a Corvette or an RX-8

I drove my friends RX-8 and was not too impressed. Maybe it shines on the track, but the MS3 was more fun working Colorado mountain roads. We have dramatic elevation changes and the turbo just pulled better in every situation, in particular accelerating out of the corners. You really have to keep the Rx-8 wound up to realize power. No doubt the turbo helped, as it loses very little power at altitude (we were over 8000 feet most of the time).

My friend said the MS3 felt great working the corners and commented on the abundance of power and torque.

So I have agreed that the MS3 is not a sports car, but contend that the fun factor and performance can be as enjoyable compared to driving other purpose built sports cars.

Or..maybe I am just a fanboy coming out of the closet...(butthump)

I drive a RX-8 on a regular basis as one of my best friends has one and we switch cars all the time. You defiantly feel sportier in the RX-8 and it takes extreme corners better and it is very fun to drive. My friend is also very impressed with the MS3 he likes the power and the sound of the turbo, etc. We've raced on a closed course a lot and to no surprised the MS3 is a lot faster when I've driving it. When he races me with my MS3 against me in his RX-8 It's a lot closer but the MS3 still wins, he's not the best driver. On a road course like “The Ring” the MS3 would be faster but on an autocross type cross the RX-8 would most likely be the quicker of the two. Very different cars though. His is a 05' sport model (No leather) 6-speed manual

The mazdaspeed 3 is a wagon no matter how much you wan't to deny it. I still want a buick roadmaster, some came with the LT1 motor out of the corvette and f bodies.

how do you differentiate a hatch and a wagon then? i personally think its a judgement call, mostly based on length. our old celebrity wagon had enough room in the back for us to bolt in 2 seatbelts so we had room for 2 more kids in there. there's no way you could do that in the mazda.

on the other hand, i've had 2 '94 celicas... one coupe and one hatch. the only thing that differentiated them really was the fact that on the hatch, the rear glass came up when you opened the trunk instead of the coupe, which just had a small trunk lid that popped up. the difference in cargo space was negligible, and the 2 didnt even look all that different.

i think this might be another judgement thing, but i'll go try and hunt down some references. if anybody knows a definitive difference, i'd be interested to hear. NO WIKIPEDIA bull, i've read enough of that in this thread already.

ok, from merriam-websters...

Main Entry: station wagon
Function: noun
Date: 1904
: an automobile that has a passenger compartment which extends to the back of the vehicle, that has no trunk, that has one or more rear seats which can be folded down to make space for light cargo, and that has a tailgate or liftgate

Main Entry: hatchback
Pronunciation: \ˈhach-ˌbak\
Function: noun
Date: 1970
: an automobile the back of which consists of a hatch that opens upward; also : the back itself

which brings the question... what's the difference between a hatch and a liftgate?

EDIT:

Main Entry: liftgate
Pronunciation: \ˈlift-ˌgāt\
Function: noun
Date: 1953
: a rear panel (as on a station wagon) that opens upward

sounds to me like a liftgate is no different than a hatch. therefore, a hatchback and a station wagon are one in the same, no?

This is a perfectly reasonable position, and far better than pretending your ride is something it isn't. I even agree with you.

Sorry, but, i don't consider a station wagon to be a sports car.

I do not detract any of the cars capabilities, but, it's not a sports car.

alright, i've been quiet long enough and i actually registered to this forum based on my thoughts from this thread

first of all, lets rid ourselves of this caveman attitude as to what a sports car should be. sports cars come in all shapes, sizes, categories, and colors now adays. this isn't the 80's anymore guys. times have changed, and so do cars. that's the problem in this world today, people limit themselves too much. look at the numbers, look at the performance. is a jeep wrangler considered an SUV? you damn right it is. just because it is a convertable 2 door, doens't make it any less of an SUV then a Nissan Pathfinder. as a matter of fact, the addition of the 2 extra doors seals the deal even more. back on topic. people, stop being so closed minded and open your eyes as to what the MS3 delivers. So what if it has 5 doors, so what if it is a "station wagon". like my man said, if it acts like a duck, walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then damn, it must be a.......

some people will disagree with me, and that's cool. that is what debate is all about. but i think my point is proven. don't just say it's not a sports car cause it doesn't look like one. that's a cop out. back up your thoughts. and if it's not a sports car, then someone tell my insurance company what it is. they have been doin this for years, i think they know what a sports car is or isn't.

PEACE LOVE RESPECT
