at least we didn't get shafted like subaru owners

Correct me if I am wrong but didnt they carry over the SAME 5 speed transmission fron the previous generation? Isint that the weakest part of the previous generation wrx's? If so I am concerned about the same tranny and how it will handle the new found power. Dont get me wrong I am not bashing on subies, I think its great that all the auto makers are stepping up the competition. That means my NEXT generation MS3 might be a 400hp AWD beast LOL I keep praying LOL

I hope the new tranny has been beefed up some, the last gen tranny was made of popsicle sticks and elmer's glue.
the problem isnt the tranny is week its the tranny wasnt made to do repeated 6,000 rpm clutch drops and as far as the wrx lools bad we have basicly the same look as them small things here and there. and the subbie has had a soft suspension for a reason. they are rally inspired. softer suspension lack of antiroll bars are advantages in off road applications beacuse it can keep all 4 wheels on the surface and the awd can sort everything out. subbie would get some better # if they came to the track w better shoes on the car unfortunantly they went w a harder less grippy tire w good wear life. beacuse this time around they were trying to sell there car on a broder base.

All i want to know is if either of you have ever owned a wrx and had tranny failure on it?

personally i have beat mine ( lol!!) pretty hard over the past year and have had 0 problems at all with the car or the trans. The whole glass trans. thing is blown way out of proportion. you have to pay to play ~

As it sits the 08wrx is quite weak when compared to the ms3, I mean its seriously getting its ass kicked in all performance parameters (0-60, 1/4mile, skid pad, slalom, lap times, etc) Sure in certain environments it would excel but most of us will never be running though a rally course on our way to work. Also, you got to be kidding yourself if you dont think that adding more power, suspension upgrades, etc arent going to have any bearing on the price of a vehicle. When its all said and done and Subaru actually goes through with a 265hp wrx with various upgrades (tires, suspension, etc, etc.) its going to cost significantly more than a 23k ms3.

Them making the price the same or slightly higher is not out of the ? ....the new 09 forrestor ( which was completely redesigned from the ground up ) has a lower price msrp than prior years. They can make changes and not make them reflect in the price tag.

So all it's going to take is a "slight" engine retune for the wrx to make an extra 40+hp?

I highly doubt it's going to be a retune --- they need to keep the car reliable to OEM standards which = pig rich.

Of course this is all speculation....Looks like they are making an announcement in 2 weeks and we'll all know the details then.

i havnt owned one. but ive had tons of friends with them. and i was staiting most of the tranny failiers that i know of was from track abuse dropping the clutch at 6 grand. which is part of the reason subaru stoped covering first gear. hell ive seen an STi transmission that had 1st gears teeth stripped off

with subaru you can gennerly tell whats comeing here to the states beacuse it was released a year ago in japan

Trannys break at some point in all cars. I know a friend who broke his dog box is his WRX. He makes over 500whp but everything breaks.

That was my point exactly..the simple thought that the wrx is crap due to the trans. isn't accurate.....now that i think of it i have seen quite a few exotics that have clutch and trans issues from abuse...nothing and noone is immune to failures.

Just confirmed over on the Subaru board (by a SOA rep) that Subaru of America will officially release all the 09 Impreza/WRX info next week...I'm hoping it is early in the week so I can make a last-day-of-the-month run at an MS3 if I want to...

When you play, you may not mind paying for tranny failures, but me, I'd rather the things that break be less expensive. I know a number of people who have had transfer cases crack or strip teeth on 2nd or 3rd gear on stock WRXs from '02 to '07. Or, you could go read the NASIOC boards about this, as there are a number of threads about it. Or, you could do what you normally do and s*** your pants when someone says something "mean" about your precious Subaru. Your call, though.

The STi 6-speed is bullet proof, but the 5-speed on the WRXs have been prone to failure since the car hit the market.

It's either going to be a slightly better breathing, retuned WRX engine, maybe running more boost, or a slightly detuned STi motor. Those are the only options that make sense, and either way it's going to be almost the same thing, as I am sure they will be sharing parts. And like you, I don't think it will cost much more at all, since they aren't going to be doing anything other than making use of parts they already have available to them from other models in their production line. That's not really something that tends to drive up costs for the manufacturer.

Try saying something bad about an MS3 on these boards and see the reaction. Some of the reactions from people are a little childish if you ask me. I'm not trying to bash you just saying on these forums people think the MS3 is gold and everything else in its price range is complete s***.

Are you kidding me? Read my post history, I am very vocal in my opposition to fanboyism, be it in support of our car or someone else's. I will trash the downsides of my ride as readily as I will any other car. I respect vehicles in general, and can appreciate any that are worth respect, I even defended the SRT-4 in a couple of annoyingly fanboyish threads on here.

I said in my post that I was not bashing you. I am speaking in general. Look at any of the threads about the new Cobalt.

Yeah there are lots of stripped 2nd and 3rd gear stories all over Nasoic, some even bone stock (well... according to their drivers). I think it's safe to say they're not that strong. And a majority of the members over there will readily admit that. I'm not saying every owner will have issues but the fact that in every story it's the same gears under similar circumstances is enough to raise a fed flag. Of course beating on it wouldn't help, but I have yet to hear similar stories from other AWD brands. Take the ms6 for example. There are quite a few modded ones - some running easily >300 to the wheels and how many with stripped gears?Very few if any. They also weigh about 3500 lbs which puts even more strain on the tranny. Their diffs and diff-mounts go before the tranny. And it's not like they're not getting their fair share of high-rev launches.

I'm usually the guy in those threads telling people to shut up and enjoy the fact that affordable performance cars are starting to become more common :P

It's a shame, too, because they don't have these problems with other cars, and the STi tranny is, quite frankly, incredible. And for the company to accuse the drivers of "abuse" is pretty typical, but in the face of so many failures? It's disappointing. Subaru generally does great things.

man i just sh*t my pants...I was speaking from my own personal experience with my car nothing else. my post wasn't meant to get anyone upset just that it's blown out of proportion. ( my opinion ) and i have read every trans post since i joined that forum about how people are having issue...most due to people not knowing how to drive quite honestly. with these cars you must slip the clutch to keep from shocking the drive train and there is very little room for error. within our club there are all of us drive our cars hard and noone has had any trans issues at all. it was just an opinion based upon my experience nothing less nothing more.

a&w i as well have defended the ms3 a handful of times..i love the car. and will continue to do so. I look forward to seeing what subaru will do with the 09 as the 08 is simply lacking and disappointing.

also beetle - not sure that the weight you posted is accurate...i weighed mine at Tulsa dragstrip last year without me in the car full interior and it read 3130lbs. Unless there scale was wrong i don't know.

also have any of you seem the new celica that toyota is coming out with? or the new coupe that subaru is making? the next celica is going to be rwd with a subby turbo engine...should be pretty sweet!

I was talking about the ms6. Its curb weight is almost 3600 lbs. Sorry if I didn't come across clearly.
