Racing Harness!?

I've looked and found nothing. Is there anyone that has installed a racing harness into their MS3 and is there a way to install one without losing the ability to have people / kids in the back seat?

You could always custom make a harness bar for the car.. but you would have to find someone that knows how to weld and do a good job with the fitment. Could get expensive since it would be a one off prolly. You might even be able to retain the factory side impact air bags. Something like on the MSP. where it connects to the seat belt anchors and then goes down to the lower achors as well would be pretty sufficient I would believe. I really want harnesses to but dont wanna get rid of my air bag potential in the seats.

have you looked for any harnesses that are made for the regular 3 hatch? if there isnt one, i am sure that something can be made. the biggest thing you would have to do is put a bar in the back of the front seats. As far as your airbags go, im sure you could retain full functionality of them as long as you just put the cross bar below the side airbags.

Hope you're planning on installing a full cage, too. I love seeing kids with 4 or 5 point harnesses in cars w/o roll cages (or at least a bar). Have fun with your head supporting the weight of the car in a rollover. 3-point belts give your body the ability to angle to the side in the case of a rollover (or other roof-crushing) event; harnesses do not.

HAHA!!! thats funny...

As for the thread subject, Talk with COBB tuning they have a harness in their car.

I will check that out. And as far as the rollover goes. I doubt I will find myself in the situation. Having a roll cage in a street car is asking to have my skull destroyed in the event of any type of colision. Very bad idea. Unless of course I wan't to drive around with a helmet on.

But yet you're looking for a harness that involves either a lone bar welded between the B-pillars. (or that's brought vertical down behind the fron't seats so it doesn't interfer with the rear seats, which is a terrible idea if you haven't learned that yet).

You could mount the shoulder straps to a rear selt belt mounting point and the waist straps to the factory 3-point mounting locations. You'd only lose use of the driver's side rear seat.

What's your reason for feeling the factory belts are inadequate? Is this for safety, staying-in-place on track days/autox, or appearance? If it's the first, get it done right. If it's the second, then you could simply remove them when not in such an event. If it's the third, then...well...good luck.

You're trying to retain the side impact airbags yet are willing to throw away the fronts (which rely on the factory seat belt tensioners to function properly). You see the obsurdity in having a full cage in a street car yet not the obsurdity of a racing harness. I'm not trying to be a dick, your logic just doesn't seem to make too much sense.

::shrug:: Your life. Insurance is going to deny your medical claim either way with modified safety equipment.

Perhaps I am asking too much. I would like to retain the factory seat belt for daily driving. I don't need the discomfort of a harness every day. But I do want something to hold me in the seal somewhat more securely for auto x and just spirited sunday driving in general. I would like to go with a back seat mounted harness bar, but it will end up killing all the leg room. I do somewhat like the idea of using the rear seat belt mounting points. I could probably live without one of the back seats. I would just need to solve the issue of the lap belt while retaining the factory three point. Any ideas?

Why waste time and money with a harness...? Just get a CG Lock!! And if you need more restraint, get a G Force torso strap.

(2thumbs)

Harness is overkill for autocrossing.

if the man wants a harness, let the man get a harness. I don't think he is going to be convinced otherwise. Plus their is always a cool factor and I am sure that is motivating him partially. Perhaps Mike has a few suggestions since absolute wants to put it in and take it out.

I picked up a CG lock, I have a autox coming up at the end of june, so ill give you some resluts. I have a harness in my track FC Rx7, but I also have a cage. As mentioned above, I would not run a full harness in a sreet car, you could get away with it during a autox, but for normal driving, its a pain.
