Possible Speed 6 Purchase

I currently have a 2006 VW GTI w/DSG. I have been looking around for some time for a new car. I particularly hate the fact that I have little to no traction with my FWD GTI and would of course love MORE power. I have considered everything from very impractical and uncomfortable 350z's, VW's own R32 which I find almost slower than my GTI and Subaru Legacy Spec B's which I have never been that impressed with especially for the price.

That leads me to the Mazda forum here. I drove a Mazdaspeed 6 a year ago and really loved the almost perfect combination of power, comfort, handling, braking, interior/exterior quality and of course the amazing practicality of the car. I then drove another Speed 6 last week right after driving a brand new 2008 350z. Yes the Z is faster however it is so impractical and nowhere near as comfortable. Truthfully I really liked the Speed 6 more for an everyday driver.

Now I just found another Speed 6, a 2007 model which seems to be a base car with no leather, navigation or sunroof but the price is OUTSTANDING ... UNDER $19k with less than 20k miles. I will probably go and look at it over the next few days.

MY main concern is the warranty. The only local Mazdaspeed dealer in Suffolk County Long Island ... which was in Smithtown NY I believe closed. I called the other local Mazda dealers and they told me they could not do warranty work for a Mazdaspeed vehicle. So the closest Mazdaspeed dealer is about 1 hour away which is NOT very practical for servicing the vehicle.

Does anyone have any insight on the warranty length of a 2007 Mazdaspeed 6 and if It can be serviced at a non-Mazdaspeed dealer? I know I spoke with someone at the each one of the local dealers however I just question whether or not they really know the correct answer for Mazdaspeed servicing ?

Anyways..... I wish I could help you regarding the "non-mazdaspeed" dealer servicing you. But, the 5 nearest dealers from me are all "mazdaspeed" dealers, I suppose I can ask the service guy I always use, see if he knows.

Regarding the warranty. The warranty is only 4 years/50k miles, and thats from the date of purchase (so if the car is used the warranty is in effect from the date the first owner purchased it).

and you said "just" under 20k miles.... well if you drive a lot and hit 30k in a year or year and a half, well the warranty is up @ 50k.... they don't have the 100k warranty, I think that was introduced for the 2008 model cars.

But I would believe most likely that, if a dealer is not a "Mazdaspeed" dealer, they most likely either don't have the trained technicians, or parts for your car if you need service.

I think in 2007 they started changing the warranties to 3 yr? I might be wrong mines an 06 so I'm not sure.

Non Mazdaspeed dealers will still work on a speed car, but a Mazdaspeed dealer usually has someone trained for it, so they would be prefered.

non mazdaspeed delears can not order mazdaspeed parts. Trust me I feel your pain my closest speed delear is almost 2 hours away from where I live.

VRM, I'm not so sure if that's correct, I do know one thing, Mazda takes FOREVER to update their site, but the last time I was at the dealer with my GF buying her mazda6 (a used '05) they had display advertisements for a 100k warranty.

we just bought our 2008 cx-7 last month, only 3yr-36,000 bumper to bumper.

Yes, the 06 MS6 has a longer warranty (48 mo, 50K) than an 07 MS6 (36 mo, 36K). If you saw a sign for a 100K warranty it was an extended warranty which is a sucker bet.

Wannabe....Are you sure your 36k warranty isn't just the bumper to bumper, and that you have the 60k powertrain warranty?

Because supposedly they have the 2 different warranties now. I'm actually appalled that mazda has lowered the warranty. Apparently it appears that the bumper to bumper is only 36k miles, and the powertrain is 60k. So after 36k the only thing covered is the powertrain? God that sucks entirely.

My GF has an extended warranty to 85k miles on her Mazda6, unfortunately it's with a 3rd party company, and she has to pay a $100 deductible on anything they warranty for work... and most the stuff they don't want to warrant and have to be fought with on.


So does anyone know where I can find out info about my 2006 speed6? is it 60k bumper to bumper, or 60k powertrain and 36k bumper to bumper?

Really? That's sweet. I've noticed for a long while that 2nd gear felt iffy.... now it feels even MORE iffy and it's getting harder to engage it sometimes.... Think they'll check that out for me?

they'll look at it. if its the clutch, thats only covered for 12,000.

It's not the clutch, I had the TSB performed at like 7 or 8k miles and I'm at 20k.... it's not slipping or anything.

I'm pretty positive it's the gears and/or synchro. No other gear does it, 1st is fine, so is 3rd, and 4th. I'll notice sometimes I miss 2nd when I go to engage it

The shifter is locked back like it's in 2nd, but it's like the gears aren't aligned or even touching, cause I'll step on the gas and the car just revs up.

....... I also noticed it started doing it AFTER I got it back from having the TSB clutch done (I was a type-A).

I've also found on this forum other members telling me they had the same issue, and it turned out their 2nd gear had to be replaced. They also told me Mazda didn't do anything about it until it got really bad

I don't want it to not worsen until AFTER warranty is up, cause that sucks, I'm already at 20k so I figure.... I have $800 set aside for when the clutch finally goes out, I'm just going to by one of the SPEC performance ones.

I drove the 2007 last week and like the 2006 I loved it. Problem is I just cant get over the fact that I have to drive over 1hr to get the car serviced. It really is just not practical for me at all. Funny thing is I have also considered buying a Honda S2000 ... I had one when they first came out in 2000 I went to the local Honda dealer, they had none but did have a 2006 RX8 GT. I drove the RX8 and loved it except for one thing ... IT WAS SO DAMN SLOW. My GTI was is definitely much quicker with the 2008 350z I drove being a ROCKET compared to the RX8. I would say the Mazdaspeed6 I drove was somewhere between my GTI and the 350Z ....

My decision would be easy if there was a Mazdaspeed dealer closer to me. In fact driving though the main auto dealer strip in Smithtown NY there where at least 5 dealerships that are completely closed down and vacant with Mazda and Mitsubishi being two of them. I guess the economy is getting pretty bad !
