Dealership Oil Change Blues

On my first oil change (free), they did the same. They put in 6qts because that's on the spec., which over-filled. I drove afterward and actually smelled oil, stopped and checked for spills, etc., and discovered the overfill. They also failed to replace two clips on the under bit and also failed to latch my hood support (rattle rattle). I bitched, of course. They said the clips aren't necessary and I said that, if it came from the factory like that, I want it to stay that way unless they had a damned good reason ("it's easier for the mechanic on subsequent work). Told them to put in 5 qts next time, start motor, and top off.

The next oil change (free) they got it right, and the service manager walked me through everything afterwards to make sure the mechanic got it right. Since it was around Christmas time I also asked to see the mechanic and slipped him $10 for goodwill.

I'm currently due for my third. We'll see what happens.

This is exactly why I have chosen to take an hour out of my day on saturday or sunday and change the oil myself.

I worked in a quick lube joint while putting myself through school.
We meant well, but what a bunch of hacks we were!
I saw the other guys gorilla torque many drain plugs to the point of stripping the threads on the pan.
They got good at tapping holes and installing helicoils. Even had to replace one aluminum oilpan that got cracked from over torquing the plug.

and there my friends is why you need to say away from the "quick" lube joints! well meaning but just dumb! (not you of course :))

Update, I just called the dealer and expressed my concern/dissatisfaction with the 3 miles put on my car for the oild change.

The service manager said that the 3 miles was from a "standard" roadtest they do with any car that's is brought in....even for a oil change. He explained that they check for any problems that the owner might not have caught themselves.

What's annoying about this is my car only has 2600 miles and I didn't ask them to inspect for any problems. Additionally this dealership has a private test track- (litterally like a 1/2 mile track with twists and turns) that they allow people to take new cars on during the test drive. I'm almost certain the car was NOT leisurly driven around the track. Besides it didn't even need to be DRIVEN in the first place for a f#cking oil change!

I asked if I could opt out of the "road test" when getting oil changes- he said, "Sure just make sure you tell them when you drop the car off". Regardless I don't think I'll be brining it back there again. The only other option in town is Jiffy Lube. *sigh*

Of course I could change my own oil, like many of you stated. But I think the $35 is well spent to sit in an airconditioned office rather than jack the car up and do the dirty work myself. :(

wow, i think sitting in the waiting room, listening to the dumb tube and other customers kids is a waste, let's get under the car and get some work done man! nothing more satisfying than doing your own work, and beyond that i can think of much more enjoyable things to spend my money on (more mods????) ;)

it does feel really good when you do somethin yourslef...no matter how long it took, how simple it was (oil), or how much of a b**** it was you can sit back and say..."yeah, i did that"...it leaves a good satisfactory feeling...

I'm all for DIY but for now I have oil changes done at the dealership. I just check the oil level before I leave. It's hard to beat for $30 bucks.
Although on my very first oil change they didn't tighten the drain plug and it leaked a little oil on my garage floor. But I just tighten it up a little so no big deal and I let them know about it the next time I went in.
I'm on my fourth oil change and overall it's been a good experience so far...

Buy some some rhino ramps for $40 so you don't have to mess with jacking. Pennzoil platinum full synthetic and a filter kit will cost you $30 and it shouldn't take you more than an hour to change it. I find this MUCH more satisfying than sitting in a boring waiting room while the dealer does who-knows-what to my car and puts in s*** dino oil.

If you had to clean your garage floor, lift the car and get under it with a wrench anyway, where's the value in your $30 spent?
I'm just sayin' :-p

Just be lucky they didnt put a 50 mile joy ride....I went thru the same thing you did (Not the Mazda tho) - next time you take it in put it in writing on the service contract: NO MILES ARE TO BE DRIVEN WITHOUT OWNER CONCENT... unauthorized miles will be credited to owner at $XYZ price per mile... have the service manager sign it and indicate why you are doing so.... believe me NO MILES will be driven....when you pick up the car before you take the keys have the service manager record miles out and have him sign it again....

I had them put a 50 mile joy ride... they first claimed it didnt happen... then I showed them signed copies by their employee on odometer reading when I took car back... quickly changed from a "didnt happen" to "sorry have a nice day"... wasnt worth pursuing except for letting car manuf. know about stealership... Ive come to the conclusion most dont give a s*** as long as dealer is selling their cars...

It does NOT require a special wrench. It requires a filter cup which you can buy from any tool or automotive shop, it slips on the end of a 3/8" ratchet (it also fits many other small diameter ford and mazda oil filters). And you do not have to drain the cartridge before you pull it off, it just makes it easier not to make a mess. I work for ford and all the ford 2.3's use the same filter setup. And the mazdaspeed3 takes 6 qts? the normal MZ2.3 takes 4.5 qts. And to laser, not trying to tell you you're wrong but if it were that much overfilled (1 gallon) it would blow white smoke out the exhaust like none other and pulling the exhaust off and cleaning out the overfilled oil would be a must. Since they did overfill it id ask them to drop the muffler and make sure there isnt anything in the muffler.

Not to forget that while, you're under there, without even realizing it you'll be scoping out the engine compartment for leaks, looking at the suspension for potential problems, etc.

+1 on the non-mazda tool. I actually got mine from a mazda dealer parts website for like 2.50 when I bought my filters. It wasn't the official mazda one but it fit perfect. I can't believe the parts dept at dealers wants 20 bucks for that damn thing.

By the way i do not reccomend anyone to use any penzoil product, go mobil 1, royal purple, or at the least valvoline.

And why would you say this? the bobistheoilguy.com forums show EXCELLENT used oil analysis for pennzoil platinum...especially with regards to fuel dilution which DI engines are notorious for. I've got pp 5w-30 in my ms3 right now.

this is what you do man if you are not into doing your own...

ask around town for the best small shop around. something with two or three bays MAX, maybe two employees, no kids working, family owned, etc. another thing to look for is a clean personal car for the owner; that can speak volumes. anyway, go in, talk to the owner, and tell him your story. ask him what kind of deal he can do if you bring your own filter and oil in for a change.

if you are going to do your own, i really prefer the filter conversion. some people see it as just an added expense, but the opportunity to use a premium filter, coupled with the less steps vs. stock, is what attracted me to mine...

also, oil debates are ridiculous and always end up doing NOTHING except wasting bandwidth.
