2008 MS3, plus a pickup and a beater car
Took delivery Wednesday, 12 March. It's my new daily driver. What a ride for the price! I've been soldiering along with a '93 Probe GT for the past 8 years, so I thought it was time for something that was a little nicer. Not knocking that old rag, though - since I got the Mistubishi distributor sorted out, it's been an anvil. Road coursed, autocrossed, drag raced, daily driver. Now we'll see if a MS3 can take the same kind of abuse.

Looking forward to seeing what this thing will do at the strip and then seeing what some minor mods will do for it. This won't ever be a hardcore racer for me, I have some other things for that, but it should be a fun distraction.

Can't wait to learn what you guys know!

Jeff S.

It's not exactly a great drag car but it's a fantastic road course car. A good coil over suspension setup and a little more power from an intake and a couple other things and this car will absolutely embarrass cars costing thousands more. Also, it seems to take abuse pretty well.

Oh and congrats on the new ride! You're gonna love it :)

welcome to the family of misfits. j/k kidding, ms3 owners seem to be a pretty mature group.

look around, read some threads to see whats going on and if at some point you do have a question.........please use the damn search buttton.

Welcome to the club. I'm a cross over from a 97 Probe GT that I had for 11 years. Seems there are alot of former Probe owners moving to the Speed 3. The 3 is much more refined and smooth, where as the Probe was more seat of your pants. I already miss the sound of the Probes KL engine. I bought my Speed 3 on February 28th and, with the help of a friend, installing the MS CAI tomorrow.

Read up on changing your oil. The filter housing can crack if overtorqued or the wrong wrench is used. The leak will be fast and the oil light will not come on until it's too late. Bye Bye engine if that happens.

I Look forward to reading more posts once you start racing.

Scott.

I've about worn it out already. ;)

Thanks for the heads up on the oil filter. I'm generally a fan of "hand tight" when it comes to filters.... hopefully that won't be catastrophic!

I kept the Probe. Just couldn't see getting rid of something that reliable and entertaining even though it has paint cancer and rattles and squeaks like a covered wagon.

The oil filter housing is not a hand tighten type. You have to have the mazda wrench to remove the housing. The filter is a drop in filter. It's the only thing I don't like about the 3.

Scott.

Oh! I have a TDI Jetta and it uses a drop-in cartridge filter. It has a hand-tighten cap on the filter housing.

Guess I'd better go exploring under the hood.

You won't find it under the hood. You have to get at it from below. And the bottom cover has to come off too.

For me that still constitutes under the hood. No big deal, just takes a fluted filter end wrench.

I see you're from Silicon Valley. I used to live in Livermore, raced at Sac Raceway, Sears, Laguna Seca, Thunderhill, Buttonwillow. Really miss it out there. Hope to move back in the not-too-distant future. One reason I bought this car is that I'm under no illusions that my beat-to-death Probe will pass SMOG II on re-entry. It barely passed when I left 4 years ago.

The rest of the vehicles in my "stable":
'02 VW Jetta TDI - Bone stock, 17.2@68, 48 mpg!
'93 Probe GT, cone filter, Borla cat-back. 14.9@93
'95 Lightning - small block, turbocharged, tow rig - 10.8@127
'93 Lightning - big block, turbocharged, fair weather cruiser - 9.3@151

WELCOME.........
LOL!! Oh now c'mon. Put the link up to the "Tow rig" going down the track with a cap on Jeff.

You want to laugh........Put a Cobb shorty cone filter/MAF housing kit (They call it a Cobb SRI aorund here) on the car when you have the time. Funny how a cone filter, silicone coupler and a new MAF housing can add as much power as it does. And the boost will hold much better. Your not reving this to 6500rpms though.

+1
Yeah the Cobb SRI is a must

I've been wanting to plot some of these stock dyno graphs vs gear multiplication to get an idea of where I should be shifting this thing on the track. A project for this week.

I put the MS CAI on the car the day I bought it. Not familiar with the Cobb SRI yet. Guess I'd better do some searching.

This is what Matt is referring to regarding the cap - http://www.fmosracing.com/videos/corvette.wmv
That's a turbocharged C6 in the other lane.

I had gone 11.40@122 the pass before and they told me to slow it down, so I was rolling off the gas. Went back two weeks later without the cap and it went 10.89.

Well if you already got the MS CAI on you're okay :)
