What shift knobs do you all have?

The stock one.

+1, being it's weighted and looks nice.

that's one of the best reasons i love this car. it already has the "ricer" mods like the pedals, the shift knob, the nice steering wheel, and seats. so i dont have to go out and try to find matching stuff that fits me or looks good.

one thing i hated about previous cars is that i had to find aftermarket stuf that was subtle and classy, yet somewhat functional. it's just nice to have that sort of stuff taken care of already, so i can spend my money on mods that will give me more peace of mind and results.

After being so pleased with the effect of removal of the mass from the shift linkage, the last thing I would want to do is have a heavier shift knob. I am thinking now about making something lighter. I used a billiard ball (number 5) for my 5.0 Mustang, maybe I will make a number 3 ball shift knob for my MS3....

that would be pretty cool! We bought a pre-fab 8 ball knob for my friends jeep, but a DIY version would be even better!

I have a 16lb bowling ball as a gear shift knob in my Beetle. It's bad assed. Automatically down shifts to first when I touch the brakes.

I did. I sold it to Nutari back last year some time. TWM shift knobs are top notch. Mine looked great. It just performed about the same as the stocker and was a bit too big.



Jbiiird, have you every tried to stop a 64 beetle going 33mph with OEM brakes?

I had to open the vent windows for drag to keep from rear ending someone .

Actually that would look really good on a Red MS3. Even any color really as the Three Ball is Red and would match the interior lights.

How do you drill into a pool ball to thread it? I thought those things are super-durable...the ones my folks have bounce on concrete and don't even crack from it.

Just clamp a 2x4 under your drill press and drill a hole to form a centered seat for the ball. Drill the ball to size with a wood drilling spade bit and expect it to really stink. Do not use a regular twist drill, it will crack the ball every time. Also out is tapping the ball, it will crack. You have to glue in a threaded insert. Since the MS3 shifter is an odd thread that I have been unable to find an insert for, I might have to use some stacked nuts, or tap a piece of tubing. Glue the insert in the ball with JB Weld.

When I get through with the crazy business travel I am currently enduring, I will do this with pics and instructions. A billiard ball can be had for $5-$7, usually.

Did you consider drilling the hole oversize and filling it with a suitable material then tapping that?

That's exactly how I proposed to my wife. Almost verbatim.



I think the MS3 has a shift knob that rivals the aftermarket. Seriously. It's pretty nice.
