Project Silver Phoenix
The rebuilding of #1857

EDIT: My car HAS risen from the ashes!!!

So, here is the official icespeed's "update as I go" thread. I've decided that I love this car too much to part with it. It's generally fast (when it runs, obviously), it drives on rails (when it actually drives, obviously) and it is my car.

Ok, so after all the stuff that I've done and still need to do, the first post of this thread would be way too long, so here are the links for the updates. I just decided to make a whole website dedicated to this rebuild. Enjoy!

probably :) - well, let me rephrase; I'll do as much as I can. I'll need help with things like pulling the block out, mounting it to an engine stand, things like that. Depending on which ECU I go with, I'll need help with the tuning as well.

I had more fun yesterday taking it apart than I've had in a long time. I'm pretty excited about it.

the reason I asked it cuz I love working on our proteges and I know alot about them and seeing if you wanted any help since we both live in florida how far you live from orlando?

Just dont end up like me. Having a protege sitting in a garage minus the engine/tranny for months. Good luck on the rebuild.

I'm in Coral Springs- it's a NW'rn suburb of Ft. Lauderdale. Three hours from you.

lol, thanks!

I'm actually setting a date of completion to be 8 to 10 months. I'm going to take my time, "do it right", if-you-will, and just have fun. I had mentioned (in another thread, maybe?) that I've assumed this car to be my hobby. Yesterday was the first time that I've "gotten dirty" in literally three or four years. I had a blast. I kept hearing Tim Allen's "manly" skit as I was taking the pipes out! haha.

dude, you are in for an adventure...

you'll learn a s*** load of crap about your car..and after is all done, any sqweeky noise or anything..you'll know what part it is..and sinc eyou have seen the part...you'll be imagining a bunch of s***..you'll feel you've gone crazy!

lol

or maybe is just my backyard mechanic buddy that lives inside my head...

just saw this...i'm gonna call my build "project OMEGA SMURF!"

LOL! Project last three-apple-high-blue-imaginary-creature! Good thinking, Fredo. How about "project ipod"? MP3 ftw! lol

Oh, for those that don't know, there was actually a reason for the title.

Taken from Wikipedia:

wikipedia said:
A phoenix is a mythical bird with beautiful gold and red plumage. At the end of its life-cycle the phoenix builds itself a nest of cinnamon twigs that it then ignites; both nest and bird burn fiercely and are reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises. The new phoenix is destined to live, usually, as long as the old one. In some stories, the new phoenix embalms the ashes of the old phoenix in an egg made of myrrh and deposits it in the Egyptian city of Heliopolis (the city of the sun in Greek). The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being almost immortal and invincible a symbol of fire and divinity.

Since my car isn't red/gold, I had to put silver in there to differentiate from just "Phoenix".

update:

So, after closer inspection of cylinder 3's rod (ya know, the one that is sticking out the side of the block) it seems that maybe the head didn't fail after all.

The bolts on the connecting rod have been completely sanded down... so much so that I don't think it is possible to unscrew them. Probably have to cut through them with a dremel or something.

So, here is the new theory...

A main bearing failed (oil starv?). This allowed for the crank to walk, eating up both sides of the connecting rod and pretty much wearing away the bolts of the connecting rod. The crankwalk caused the rod to bend, as it slapped against the cylinder wall and eventually caused it to snap in half.

It seems that the ticking noise from the two weeks prior to kablooee was the rod hitting the walls, not a valve sticking. I'll know for sure once the head comes off.
