Project Silver Phoenix

so, we turned it over tonight..... fired right up, but there was a loud ticking noise from the 2nd cylinder... from the top. We took out the spark plug (I bought the bosch platinum cheapo's to just get the engine up and running). The spark plugs have four prongs instead of one... non gap type. Anyways, three of the four prongs were ever so slightly pressed in. We're talking like 1/5 of a mm compared to the fourth prong. Then, clear as day, there were three dimples on the piston head. We took out the other spark plugs and it looks like cylinder 3 is hitting as well.

I'm waiting back for more info on the head (as it was purchased from someone on the forums) to see if it was decked. I'm pretty sure the block was decked when it was blueprinted, balanced and honed, but I thought the lower compression pistons (8.5:1) would've counter-acted any decking. It's amazing how close these tolerances are.

So tomorrow (today, technically) I'm going to go buy a few washers for the spark plugs.... just to see if that is the only problem with then engine. I know it's a quick fix, but atleast we can see if anything else is wrong in the meantime. The check engine light was lit up, so hopefully that'll go away with the new gap/spacing. Long term, I'm gonna have to find a thicker head gasket. I think 1mm thicker would be a good size.

I'm sooooo sorry for the triple post, but the forum isn't allowing me to put all of the update in one post....

Anyways, everyone keep your fingers crossed!

go with the cometic triple layered head gasket.
that's what i ran.

I was told that these pistons do not come in 8.5:1, so I guess I was mis-informed from the guy I bought the shortblock from. The only thing I could think of is maybe they shaved the pistons (?), as looking over the block, there was alot of work done to it. I figure that a thicker gasket doesn't hurt for my plans with this car anyways... uwahahahahahaha

As for the sparkplugs, the msp's plugs are substantially shorter than a stock protege's (as my mom drives an LX and we pulled one of her plugs for comparison). I still need to get new plugs... but, let's get everything else up and running first!

so whats the progress report? your last update was 2/14. have you done anything else with it? or are you still working on the gasket issue?

when you completely done with your car we gonna race:D lol cuz now I'm puttin down a little over 300 to the wheels. (drive2)

Yeah, so I threw in the towel and had a "pro" look at it. The ticking noise is one of the valve caps. The clearance between the cam and the intake valves is greater than "accepted" values. Which means that the ticking noise means nothing to me! muwahahahaha. Now, the only thing left is the rear oil seal. Friggin car is leaking oil badly. lol, I'm over it. I'm just having the shop do the seal. I should have the car back by wednesday. Then I need to get tires. fingers crossed!

lol, I will never be completely done with this car! But sure, I'll put you in your place! bahahahahahahahahahahahaha

when u say rear oil seal is that the one on the transmission side?

i thought this was a built block....sucks that that happened mang...

update:

I drove my baby home (well, technically, I drove her over to firestone for some new shoes! :))

Everything seems in order. She holds boost well. There was a little white smoke out of the exhaust on one particular down shift, but other than that, she sounds great.

I threw a code saying primary o2 sensor circuit error. I'm wondering if this has to do with the lower compression? I know she's running pig rich. So I think an AFC is necessary now.
