Intake, Real HP or just noise???

Does just an intake on a Stock Speed3 make power?

When dynoing a car, it is more than just what it should be making. You have to take in air temps, ambient shop temps, hood open or closed, the gear its done in, etc. On an amazing day, I could see the Mazdaspeed, or any true CAI for this car for that matter, pulling out 30 at the wheels.

No, you wouldn't. Instead you'd see a negative correction factor taking into account most of those variables. Open or closed hood seems to make little difference if you have adequate cooling.

I definitely agree about bang-for-the-buck. You can definitely tell the difference. Great mod for modding newbies like me, too, b/c it's so simple it's pretty hard to screw up as long as you're careful to make sure everything is tightened up.

I have not seen anybody specify that the increase is 29 whp. Do you have a link or a quote or something? Anybody got a dyno?

As far as a guarantee of no warranty issues, that is specified absolutely nowhere. Unless you have the parts installed prior to taking delivery, you get the Green warranty. That is a replacement of parts only. I don't care what the dealers say, they are guaranteeing nothing. You are relying on unofficial policy unless you have a separate writing from Mazda NA.

Of course I can't find it now, but I read a road test where Mazda brought two Speed3's. One bone stock and the other with the CAI, CBE and coil overs. The rep told the reviewer that the CAI and CBE together were good for 29 HP.

When I talk about no warranty issues, I mean that Mazda won't claim that the add-on parts caused something else to go wrong. In other words, if you installed the two upgrades and the engine blew, it isn't your fault (unless of course they find that boost cut eliminator). Whenever I install an aftermarket part (technically these are Mazda, not aftermarket, but for our purposes they might as well be) I expect the parts to have their own warranty and not be covered under the original car manufacturer's warranty.
I don't expect a Mazda CBE kit to have the same warranty as the factory exhaust, but I also don't expect them to claim that the CBE caused the Cat to burn out prematurely. The "Green" warranty gives me this assurance.

Cobb is aware of the benefits of cold air intake as opposed to an under the hood intake. They are supposedly working on a box to convert their SRI to a cold air setup. The filter will sit in an insulated box, which is getting its supply from in front of the car. This seems like the ultimate setup. Ease of maintenance without worrying about hot air limiting our safe boost levels.

when i had my VW R32, a company called Evolution Motorsports (evoms) made an intake of that type. i had one on my car and it actually made more power than a CAI with the intake filter located away from the engine bay.

given that i just purchased a Cobb SRI, i hope they come out with a set up like the one described above. along with a good flash, i think we'd have a winner.

The CAI will offer a bit more on the high end, since flow is better and less restricted. However, after having a CAI on my GTI, I will NEVER, EVER again have one. That blow-off valve sound is the dumbest thing I've ever heard and annoying as ****. Not worth the supposed gains whatsoever.

Don't get an intake, period, on the Speed3 then. I was running the Mazdaspeed intake as a SRI for a bit, and it was just as loud as the Mazdaspeed as a full CAI, and the CP-e.

Are you sure you didn't lose any HPs converting it into an SRI...?
I would be hesitant in doing that since you are changing the original design of the intake... It will still work, but I wonder if its still as effective as it was meant to be installed.

I agree. You will be changing the design and I would be worried if it would lose it's effectiveness. I would stick with the CAI if I were you and not mess with it.

Well as the thread starter, I ordered the Cobb SRI today. All these gains seem to impressive for 174 bucks shipped but well see. Plus I'm hoping that Cobb makes there Maps for the Access Port using there own SRI and the car will be tuned for the SRI. Thanks for all the info guys, not putting down the CAI's at all and I'm sure the Cobb Maps will work with any intake, but I''m gonna stay loyal till Cobb until Q2 2008 and then if the AP isn't out maybe I'll change my mind. But for now, Cobble Cobble.
Tom,

Design? What design? AEM probably spent about 10 minutes on it.

Lol yeah, seriously. I wouldn't be surprised if with a bit of mounting changes, it could fit a regular Mazda3 or another car. It don't bother me none, it ran hard as an SRI, it ran hard as a CAI, and I'm sure the guy I sold it to is running it hard however he has it set up now. I have the CP-e in, it sounds nice, it pulls just as hard as the MS CAI, and I like it.

Tom,

i ordered my cobb sri on a monday night and received it on a wednesday. you'll be sure to enjoy it.

i am waiting in anticipation for the maps.

Jungle if you mean access ports maps, me too. "i am waiting in anticipation for the maps"

My guess is just an intake and AP with a 93 Octane Map should make for a 13.0 car. guys are running mid-12's with almost no tuning, i don't think I'm exxagerating.

Cobb maps will definately be a major improvement. I am sure top end will be improved considerably. Smoothing out of the power drop off in the high end of the powerband is a typical improvement with their stage 1 software.

Shark, Thats exactly what my WRX buddy told me when i told him about the high-rpm loss of power.

Well I just installed the Cobb SRI and there is definetly a power increase as I haven't seen my TC light go off that much ever. Its pretty loud, nobody won't know your tuirbocharged now and as much as I'm old and wanted it quiet, its a pretty fun sound.lol

Tom
Guess as I started this thread I should take the poll.
