Mazda 5 Turbo

You guys in this forum can tell me till you are blue in the face about how nicely your 5 handles because it is smaller than a van, but you have got to be kidding me. Drive an msp or speed3 and you'll forget about your 5...

I raced an older BMW 318 up to 120 mph coming back from Vegas. He was impressed. If I had a turbo, the Ferrari might have been impressed too!

No offense. MSP has a very good engine and setup for it time... but Mazda5 has much more potential than MPS.

Mazda5 has brand new and better design engine, Chassis, Suspension, transmission, Brakes, Safety... etc,. The Protege which the MSP based on is an updated, improved version (but not brand new design from ground up) of the 91 Protege. The technology different between the Mazda5 & MSP could be as much as 10 years if is not more.

And FYI, the horsepower differnet between a stock MSP(170) & Mazda5(153) is only 17hp. For both car to reach 270hp mark, I will believe it will cost about the same. I don't think you don't need to upgrade the stock turbo, intercooler and other parts on the MSP to reach that mark.

Does it worth the money to turbo a Mazda5? It is all depended on the person who write the check... Will I trade my 5spd Mazda5 for MSP? Hell No.

My msp doesnt share its suspension with a 91 pro unless 91 pros come with racing beat springs, sway bars, strut bar, springs and tockico shocks. Your little 5 cant hang with a msp suspension. As for your figures on 270 hp...well if you want rods coming through your block spend the money. An msp isnt getting more than 250 without needing internals and sad to say neither is your 5. Also an msp absolutely has to upgrade the intercooler and stock turbo to get to 270. It sounds like you need to research more about turbos before slapping one on your 5.

Listen Im glad you love your 5, but to me they are mini Mpvs and nothing more.

it was a 02 Audi A4, 05 Mustang, and my 06 Mazda5. We "driving fast" from the state line back to 210fwy. I was impressed how stable the Mazda5 was over 110 mph.(headbang)

CD player is a CD player, even it is bulid in 2003. it still using the same technology as the CD player from 1991. And It can't pass as a DVD player from 2005.

that statement shows your ignorance. Cd players from back in the day have different technology now than they did then. Anti-skip, better and slimmer design, technology so that the battery last longer. Also why would a cd player need to be a dvd player...it has a different function all together...your analogy is garbage Just because the shell of the car is based on an older protege doesnt mean every part is the same. Of course that is why you didnt have anything to say about the 03 suspension setup. with your argument all cars are the same as the cars built in the 30's. I mean by your own admission that means your car is as of the same technology as the original car. They are all based on a design of something in the 20' or 30's that had 4 wheels and a motor, but you are going to argue that technology cannot change?? I call BS teeny bopper. if you still can't understand why I use CD and DVD as a example to help you understand "No matter how much you update and improve the old technology. It still can't be beat the new technology." I am vey sorry.

as for your 03 suspension setup... yes, mazda use more brand new parts, but the basic design is still same as my old 91 ford escort/mazda protege. I didn't memtion it because I don't want want to hurt your feeling.

With my ASE and the 5 turbo cars (2 Ford Sierra Cosworth, 05 WRX, 07 CX-7, & 08 C30) at home, I think I know what I am talking about when I am talking about the different between cars, NA, and turbo.

you don't need a car to help you pick up chick when you have a lot more to offer......

That Auto tranny would be designed for that. I don't think the auto (and cheap torque converter) in the MZ5 is designed to take it.

If I were to go turbo I would be patient and poor and get the entire drivetrain out of the Speed3. That would yeild the most OE result with the fewest after-swap headaches IMO. Besides its only a matter of time before someone does it anyway! I think the "autos don't work with turbos" argument is make specific. Look at Easy Street Motorsports with the WRX they HAVE to use autos because the torque converter allows the AWD system to survive 1,000 WHP. I'd rather have a manual myself, but that is personal preference.

I'm hoping I'll be able to get a Mitsubishi turbo by then. The Saab Aero has a Mitsu, and the others had Garrett. I have yet to see a post from an Aero owner losing a turbo.

That's right! I drove the CX-7 auto and it really sucked!!, turbo or not. I think if I can find the right resources (pro installers), I WILL go with the Garett turbo setup. I just want to be ABSOLUTELY sure before dropping 6 or 7g's into ANY car! Plus, I don't wwant any headaches afterwards, if they can be avoided. I'm not planning on racing, but just want a little extra power for merging onto the highway, passing, etc.

Also, if anyone is interested, this is the place I got my dash kit and door sills from. They carry some M5 acc's, but I don't see the LED door sills anymore.

I can't even imagine taking on a car with HP in my 5. (boom06) My 1988 Mustang could have blown my 5 away... I think I've only owned 2 cars that were slower... a 1974 Celica and 1971 Ford Courier.

You are absolutely right. I took the time to re-read the article about ESX and their WRX's with auto tranny. The trannies they used were SERIOUSLY built. On a side note, there is no reason to down someone for wanting to turbo a 5. I'm sure the first guy who wanted to turbo his Protege5 got the same crap from the same narrow-minded kind of people. If it brings you joy, go for it! Just be prepared to shell out some serious coin as the pioneer in a new field.

how is anyone gna compare a 5 to a msp... 2 totally different vehicles... but as far an handling goes, the msp is a far better handling car than most other vehicles on the road so there is no comparison...

Besides about 300lbs on the manual car and 6.5" in height and a slightly longer wheelbase, what's the big difference between the Mazda3 and Mazda5?

I wouldn't add a turbo kit to it, or most car's. But I would certainly consider a Mazdaspeed3 engine swap. And that makes as much sense to me as putting 260hp into FWD economy hatchback.

And that's the beauty of the custom car culture, not everyone has to embrace economy sedans or hatchbacks. Some of us want utility with our sport.

to each is own i guess, i personally wouldnt spend the money to turbocharge a mazda5... i would rather just buy a mazdaspeed 3 or even a WRX wagon... much better platforms for performance, and also very functional vehicles for everyday use, not to mention they would more than likely be much more reliable than a turbo mazda5... but if it makes you happy and you want to start a trend then do what your heart desires. after all, it is your bank account. lol

the base price for the MSP back in 2003 was $21,000. If we change it to today money... it will be some where around $24k, $25...

Mazda5 cost somewhere $19 out of the door(I got my Touring 5spd at this price)... with the $6k different, I am sure we can bulid a Mazda5 outperform the stock MSP in many areas....

MSP is a nice car and unique in the mazda's line-up during that era, but......

There are reasons why the C1 plateform and the MZR engine won many awards around the world...

Dude... they are two totally different vehicles aimed at two different crowds, there's no use comparing... the MSP is a much rarer, limited edition vehicle aimed at a younger crowd while the mazda5 is aimed at families...
And with $6k the only area the 5 will outperform the MSP is in a straight line...

$6k is more than enough to bulid the Mazda5 out perform the stock 170hp MSP in any areas... just the cyclinder head from cosworth will be enough to do the job. And still have $$ left for Tein SS Coilover, plus Whiteline Sway bars.
