hhhmmmmmmmmmmmm.........

if average income doesn't determine poor , mid class , an rich , then what is ?? By the way you spend your money ???? If we look at it this way, i guess some of the celebrities like mc hammer and mike tyson is considered...well, poor ? cuz they don;t know how to spend their money ????

so a guy that makes 40k a year that lives in his mom's house that doesn't have any bills to pay is RICH ???? hooray !!! "there goes the american dream"

But then again, i guess the government doesn't look at it that way, they place you in a bracket of how much u make a year to determine what class your in.... If you're a millionaire that like to blow your money, thats not the governments fault, thats yours ....they still consider you rich... just stupid rich ....

Lets face it guys, THEY base us on our income , not on how we spend our money... in this case, under the six figure mark is middleclass....its up to you on how you blow your money away :-)

Location, assets, earning potential, and income are the determining factors, and not income solely.

You would consider me upper class base by my combined income with my wife. I can assure you, we're middle class.
Even factoring in our assets that are either owned outright or financed at amounts allowing for liquidation and payoff.

Mike Tyson could have his earnings squashed and bring in ZERO for 2007. If he has enough in assets, investments, or outstanding contracts, he'd still retain his upper class status . Celebrities are bad examples BTW. We, as average people do not have the ability to earn based on a trademarked image or name. Unless a celebrity gets bagged for tickling kids inappropriately or aiding terrorists, they usually still have a strong earning potential.

You know what , everybody is entitled by their opinion, so noone is right or wrong when it comes to "income".

In this case, i rest this thread an stare at my new wife... :-)

Swamps correct. Go to your library or book store and pick up a book on wealth building. Money itself is pretty worthless, (sounds funny huh?) Your income could be wiped away with a car accident, lay off or firing. Someone who has assets producing income for them does not have to concern themselves about income. They have cash flow they use to create more cashflow through assets.

+1 The reason I drive the 25K car is that I'm not rich.

Although I make that money I am very "fruggle" and that is one of the reasons that I drive a MS3. In 2004 I was graduating from the first part of my residency and bought a brand new, off the showroom floor, 2004 Mazda 3. I loved it but it just wasn't powerful enough. When Mazda came out with the speed I bought one. As you can see I have been on the board here for 3 years. The OG's here know me. I don't post that much here but with the recent tragedy to my car I figured I would post some and participate in the threads again.

Thanx...

I would venture to guess anybody claiming 50k or less is more than likely telling the truth. I'm not saying anyone claiming over that is not, merely that it is most likely that persons claiming less income are more likely to be believed as why would someone lie about their income and report lower amounts... And someone else said it before, class is how you live; if you have a modest home that meets your needs but doesn't exceed them and you don't have a lot of extraneous objects, you are likely middle class. Even if you have a mil in the bank. Upper class wastes money on Mercedes and larger homes than they need and have larger, more expensive or technologically pretty versions of things we all have (TVs are flat, refridgerators have TVs, wood floor is from some rare going-extinct Brazillian rainforest, shoes are Italian Leather and cost $3-400 a set...). Class is merely manipulation of perception - nothing else, certainly not the more standard definition of the word 'class' meaning refinement; refinement is not 'having' and 'showing' it is merely modesty, frugality, respect, and knowledge.

160k IT specialist?

I see that most people in the "IT" field are posting the norm average income for that field of work. CTGrey02 are you a Cisco or Oracle specialist? Some crazy proprietary/niche network admin? Because that salary is pretty out there. However, if you don't want to elaborate I respect that.

I manage a large wintel/san/vmware environment for IBM. While I do manage some SQL and Oracle Databases it's not the main area of my focus. I don't make 160K, I make 116K roughly. That's with roughly 10k in bonuses I know I'm getting this year coming. I also have other assets making money for me. My wife has a photography business on the side and I have a website that makes money for me that I'm thinking of selling to start another business. Those were not taken into account of that 116K. That was just before tax salary. I have 5 cars (the 2003 Sante Fe isn't listed in my sig as my wife drives that.) and a 260K house (2100 Sq feet, small 1/3rd acre lot), so It's not like I don't have liabilities to show for the income level as well. www.ctgrey02.com/pics/mazda You can see the Focus's reflection in the mazda's paint, the Mustang in the garage, the Sante Fe plainly and if I'm not sure if the Camaro's showing in the back yard, but it's under a cover if it is. Again, if I knew when I was younger, what I know now about money and income, I'd have much more to show for it than a bunch of cars and suburban house. I'd rather have more assets and less income so I'd have to pay less in taxes. The cars taxes alone are over 800 a year, over 4000 a year for the house and I'm afraid to look at the income taxes, but I have a feeling I'm going to need to get creative. Lastly, I got married in NY a year ago and had a 58K wedding which I had to finance a good amount of (nightmare). I've paid off roughly 28K this past year and plan to have the remaining 3K I owe paid off by May. The Mazda will be paid off (I only put 1k down) in 19 months. You can't pull stuff off like that on a lower income. But the fact that I had to finance this crap and had to work for the money to do it is why I'm middle class. Once the house is paid off and I no longer have to work to pay my taxes and utilities, and own several more assets like rental properties and other businesses I plan to start, I won't need this job. I'll probably still drive cheap fast cars too.

Well that clears that up, just finishing up mcse and it's good to see salary ranges from within the IT field and the lifestyles that go with them. Appreciated.

No worries dude. Just do yourself a favor and start looking into other sources of cash flow while your landing a nice cushy job. We work in a volatile field, and it's nice to have extra cash coming in when needed. Money management has become a major passion of mine lately.

Comparing against what numbers I've seen up here, I'm a lightweight!

Age : 27
Occupation : Identifix Product Trainer and Support Specialist
Income : 'Bout 48K plus bonuses at times
Stress : LOW, fun job talking with techs and making their days and lives better
Hours : less then 40 a week in the office M-F, but on call for customers at all times.
