Brake failure - totalled my MS3

I'm sure am glad you are alright..
but im just not getting it..you had 3000 miles on the car and you had been to the track 3 times prior in which you burned through your brakes totally over that period of time? where they stock pads?

its been said a few times that they were hawks...

sometimes aftermarket pads work better, but dont last as long... and definitely when youre at a track using the brakes a lot to slow down from high speeds, its going to wear them fast...

I thought that was obivous to most people just like your tires dont last as long either.

holly f**king s*** ! daaaamn! I thought when i hit a telephone pole in my old car the my s*** was bad but damn bro. i like yourself am just glad to be here to this day..Its good to know that you are ok andi bet you hurt like hell for awhile cause i know i damn sure did..Your pads went really quick but what do you expect runnin at 135mph for 10 days or whatever thats harsh on the pads Good Luck to ya glad you ok man. Brian

wow dude that sux im sorry to hear about this. glad you are ok.

P.S did the tread get ripped off the tires or did you have slicks?
cause it looks like you had slicks on the rear too. just curious

crazy story and pics!

as many have said before, glad to see youre ok and very glad that mazda's safety measures are that good...

Nitto NT-01 DOT legal R-compound tire. Not much tread depth to start with - they turn to slicks pretty quickly. I highly recommend them for track duty - a notch above Toyo RA-1 stiffer sidewall, larger tread blocks, same durable compound.

GDorris: I know you had the Hawk pads on, did the stock pads have a "squealer" pad wear indicator tab-thingy on them?

I was just wondering, 'cause it seems criminally negligent for a manufacturer to have an ABS system that defeats your ability to brake at all if the pads get low, and then not give you any indication that they're getting there. I realize this doesn't apply in your situation, I'm just curious 'cause you said something in and earlier post about there not being any warning, even stock.

That looked like fun...been in a few incidents of the same nature. Nice to see the airbags worked. Good to know that you came out alright. Sure would love to see the vid...

you ever been to the track? I have annihilated brake pads after just 2 track days on bikes and cars

No mechanical wear indicator and no electronic pad sensor. You are right - there should be one or the other.

Wow, you'd indicated as much earlier, but I just wanted to clarify... That's a really bad combination of elements:
1. no warning
2. potential for uneven wear
3. idiotic "ice mode"

Looks like a recipe for disaster! Have you considered writing a letter to Mazda to let them know that this is a possible problem?

Problem is, there are too many nonstandard variations to account for. High traction slicks, aftermarket pads, high speeds, intense use over a short period of time, the list goes on. It's probably a combination of these factors that led to the combination of uneven wear and brake system confusion.

At the very least, this can serve as a warning to those who want to put some serious track time on their MS3.

Nail on the head - regardless of uneven brake wear or lack of wear indicators, I drove it on the track without making sure I had enough pad - no excuses. However, I do plan to give Mazda detailed info so they can look into it and so they have the ability to see if a pattern emerges. Also, if I send a letter to Mazda, it will go into their database and be discoverable if there is further legal action by someone else with similar bad luck. I hope mazda at the very least adds wear indicators - pennies per car.

Geez, dude. So sorry for what happened. One of the worst track day wrecks I've ever seen. Glad you're OK, though. I, too, would like to see the vid. I don't think it will "hurt" the track day industry, so no harm in posting it.

You're not the only one winging it with track days re: insurance. Frankly, I don't even know if my policy covers my car (only taken my MS3 once). If I asked my ins agent, who's also been a family friend since before I came along, she'd have my ass if she knew what I've been doing the past 4 years.... :)
