Finally Installed a Good System (Pioneer)...

Looks good, I put the Avic D3 in my cx-7, and i had to get XM agian, I really miss it for the first month or so when I get a new car, one thing you sould get is the xm traffic reciever, which will get you around traffic jams, and construction delays. I got it and I love it.

I guess the domain is down... hopefully it'll be up and running later. Interested to see how this came out.

I put an AVIC D3 in my MSP a few months ago and couldn't be happier with it. I thought about the Z2 but, at almost twice the cost, thought against it.

Just wondering... since it doesn't sound like you're going to be utilizing the hard drive, why did you go with the Z2? Based on my research, the aforementioned hard drive (and slightly bigger screen) were the only major differences.

Looks like the photos are back up. Looks good!! The screen size difference between this model and mine (the D3) is noticeable. While it costs almost twice as much, it certainly looks better (in a vehicle like the CX-7) so I can understand the rationale.

Those background photos are cool. I've been meaning to do that to mine for a while.... this is the kick in the pants I needed.

Last but not least... if you're unable to get the steering wheel controls to work, you can always do what I did and get the steering wheel unit Pioneer makes. I fastened it to my windshield wiper and, believe it or not, it's within perfect reach of my pointer finger. My other car (Element) has typical steering wheel controls but I find them hard to get to while driving. My way is somewhat ghetto... but more than does the job.

I'll be calling my installer this week about the steering wheel controls... he's got a solution, but we didn't have time to try it before I went on vacation.

My rational in going with the Z2 was the navigation. I didn't want to have to switch DVDs when driving out of state. I MAY end up using the hard drive library eventually, but right now the iPod is working outstanding.

Thanks for the compliments ont he background pics. I do photography as a hobby (mostly... only rarely professionally) and I enjoy having my own photos as backgrounds.

I'll say this... we just went to Florida (drove) on a 10 day trip... having this nav system was EXCELLENT. The live traffic did indeed help us avoid delays. Having XM to listen to the Mets game on the way down was a beautiful thing! Having our entire music library with us, and in the car, on our iPod, was great (we always bring an Apple HiFi with us on vacations too). And the bluetooth connection to my phone got used more than once. The navigation itself functioned really well, and we were able to find just about anything we needed along the way and when down in Orlando... and with the Bypass it was easy to program while driving. The detailed 3D maps when in major cities was very neat (in Tampa, and when we drove through Washington DC).

We had a very good experience with the Z2 for our first big trip out of state.

Any News?

I am planning on doing my own upgrade possibly this weekend. Any word on whether you got the steering wheel controls working?

PS: I also am going with the Pioneer AVIC Z2. Was seriously considering the Kenwood DNX7100 because of the Garmin but finally decided this was the better choice.

do yourself a favor and look at the avic d3 it's basically the same as the z2...(doesn't have a HD but you can hook up an ipod to it) and it costs less than half as much

Steering wheel controls work fine :D

Funny to relook at my own pictures after all this time... gotta say, this is one of the best decisions I ever made... I've been SOOOO happy with the Z2 and the install the shop did. I get tons of compliments on it!

I love my Z2, how do you change the background just burn the pictures on the cd or is there a certain step you need to take.

I'm sorry to bring up such an old thread but I just bought a used 2008 Mazda CX-7 Grand Touring. It had the factory NAV and bose system which I've replaced with a Pioneer deck. The car also had a factory camera installed but I don't know which wires are for the camera so I can hook up the camera to the new deck by splicing in a composite connector. Can anyone help? Not even my installation shop can figure this out and it seems your installed, Tim, has.
