All decent engine management systems will achieve similar gains, if they can control fuel and timing. Difference in these units is usually in the nice to have department, as well as maturity in the tuning software.

I had less mods than that when i went stand alone, and the gains were phenomenal. With VICS disabled (because I havn't wired it up yet), so running on the "low rpm" side of things, i was able to get a 0.6s improvement on my quartermile, with huge increases in mph.

I'm a big fan of the microtech units, because they are built with the "keep it simple stupid" idea in mind. Theres no flashy features, they are relatively inexpensive and they get good strong gains. Maxx_Mazda is a huge fan of the haltech units because of all of the extra goodies you get with it, and the intuitive tuning software. End of the day, the gains are going to be simillar and it comes down to how much money you want to spend.

??

Thanks again for the reply. I'm planning on getting the Haltech kit for 1.6 Protege @ USD$1,350.00 with injectors from Hiboost.com. Do you think thats the best route to take or do you recommend another? Do I need to get anything else with this?

do you NEED injectors?

just make sure your ecu can handle fuel AND timing. Fuel only wont give you nearly as much gain.

I still have the stock injectors. Is there a way for me to make sure my ecu can handle this? The haltech should override the ecu. I hope I'm right? Still learning(uhm). Do you know of a better way?

any good stand alone will talk to any injectors....

what sort of mods are you running?

if you're not boosted, or running astronomical RPM theres no reason to upgrade your injectors...

The above mods is the only thing done. I have Adjustable Cam Gears, but I haven't install them yet. And I'm thinking about buying Complete Pulley Set (lightweight). Thats all.

Get cams, and have the cams setup properly first (including valve lash, etc) and then do your standalone. If you're shooting for peak HP, get the 626 intake manifold too. If it's a daily driven street car, I suggest port and polish with VTCS removal on stock manifold.

The Haltech can control your VICS after that. Please search if you don't know what those things are.

The Haltech is probably your better bet for a 1.6... so you are on the right path.... I haven't done any MT's for the 1.6 but they are available... I just wouldn't be able to support it well.

Start with stock injectors... get the bugs worked out and then bump up to the bigger injectors... that usually works well for most people... but you can go right to bigger injectors if needed. A wideband is you very very best friend!!! So make sure you have/get one, it'll save you many days of headaches.

You will not need bigger injectors on an N/A engine.

bit of a generalisation.

my NA build plans require some pretty out there RPM. I won't be anywhere near the power limitations of the stock injectors, but i'd much rather open a big injector a little bit at high RPM, than open a small injector a lot.

There certainly are circumstances where you would consider larger (and in some cases, MUCH larger) injectors on an NA car.

I also don't see a need for him to do cams, P&P and so forth prior to a stand alone. Stand alone was the very first thing I did, and there are advantages to doing it early - namely the ability to get the absolute most out of every other mod you install. Costs you more in tuning in the long run, but definantly has its benefits...
