Need help, I am begging... (TURBO LAG from DEAD STOP)

So the my CX7 has been the in shop for 5 days to fix some scratches, add fog lights, autodim mirror and the run turbo lag update (TSB 01-053/06). I went to the dealer to pick it up and was excited to drive it because I thought the 4 second turbo would be fixed, I could care less about the fog lights and the mirror at this point. So I get in the car, drive off the lot and stop and I floor it - same issue as before I took in the vehicle but now it seems worse. As I watch the RPMs I am moving and the speed is increasing from 0 to about 10-12MPH and after a few seconds the RPM's hit between 3000 and 3500 and then I finally start to really accelerate. I try again, same thing with the TCS off (air was off on both tries) and then I go back to the dealer and have the service guy get in and show him. He tells me that the CX7 has turbo lag and this is normal and to hold my brakes and get to 3000 RPM and then let go of the brakes and that the 4 seconds is normal. I said it was totally unacceptable and I ask him if he has a vehicle that has more miles on it and we try that one, same issue. My build is 9/06 and their newest vehicle is also 11/06. I asked to see the guy that did the flash and asked him to flash it back because it seems much slower response and he said that was not possible. I told him and the service people that this lag was unacceptable and they said they couldn’t do anything other than talk with a Mazda rep and call them in to have them test drive it with me. I asked them how that was going to change things and did not get a response. I told them that my family could not drive this vehicle if it takes 4 seconds to get above 10mph.

At this point, I said that I had a friend in like Missouri and one in Fort Collins, Colorado and that their turbo lag was only a second and they said that was normal because of the altitude, ok fort Collins is not much different than where I live, so I told him I would drive to fort Collins to prove him wrong. I asked them what they needed from me to prove them wrong and they couldn’t answer.

Since most of you all drive CX7's, is this normal???

If not, can you PM me with the last 8 digits of your VIN, the build date, your city and if you have had any TSBs done to fix this issue? I am begging for some help, I don’t want to trade down to another vehicle but I dont think I have a choice.

note: the last 2 fillups have been 91 octane gas

Sounds like you got a lemon, it should start "accelerating" at 2.5K, not 3, even with the lag. And turbo engines make the same HP in any alt., so I don't see how it would change or make the lag bigger. And take it to a few dealers, Test drive a few of their CX-7's, and if Mazda does not want to fix or replace your car seek legal action to see about reinforcing the lemon law, but thats a last resort type of thing.

I do not think it should be going into turbo around 3500, right? It should be around 2000-2500? It just seems to take FOREVER to get from 1000 to 2000...

i just dont know what to tell the dealer because they think this is normal and their lot is full of old builds... I doubt another mazda dealer is just going to let me test their CX7s considering I am not their customer. If they are actually going to bring in a Mazda rep, then the rep should know better right?

Yes, just make it clear that you are unhappy and what the problem is, and maybe even let the rep drive it to see, but another Mazda dealer should have no problems letting you test drive one, just tell them you are in the market for a 2nd one, having the experience of a CX-7 without the problems stated could help you strengthen your argument and feelings about the lag.

It shouldn't take 4 seconds to reach 10mph even without boost let alone in it.

Call Mazda directly and complain and take the vehicle to another, this is why i

hated taking my car to the dealer with problems(most of them are idiots :-\ .)

They updated mine last week, the update made the transmission soft and a little too smooth between gears, basically when I stomp the gas now at a stand still, the torque converter is less aggressive so the rpm jumps to the 2k-2.5k sweet spot, the tranny is less sporty but this helps take the lag out.

what TSB did they run and what is your build date???

apparently i made a bad decision buying a mazda! It is embarrasing getting beat off the line by hybrids and metro's.

I really dont know what to do next

Did you get the info i sent you on the tansmission?its something the dealer will have to call the tech line over not the mech. in the shop will now how to fix, make CERTAIN you here them calling my dealer lied to us so i went to another dealer and found the truth, that the updates were not even done!We also called mazda 800 they helped some not to much most was done by there DM getting involved which was sad it had to go that far,Well good luck oh and our truck is also 2006 production date last five of vin:50651.If you need to talk let me now may this dealer can assist as well.

Bring it to another dealer. See if you can test drive one while it is in for service. It sounds like the dealer you went to f'd up all of the 7's on their lot...

Have you taken any of the recommended steps? looked at the PDF file in my other post above?

thats the flash they did and they put the sticker in the doorjam saying they did it, but it made it worse or at least it didnt fix the issue

i am going to get in touch with one of the CX7 owners on this board that works for a mazda dealer that is an hour drive from my house, maybe he can help see if my dealer did the update. I am going to have my dealer do the transmission update but I honestly dont see how that would reasolve the issue considering it has to do with 3rd, 4th and 5th gears but that is the only other TSB that I can figure has to do with my issue (05-012/06).

In regards to it being a lemon, do the fixes have to be done by the same dealer or do I just need to prove I took in more than 3 times, no matter the dealer?

Hey bond007taz - sorry to hear of your issue. I'm just up the road a bit (Westminster) and was down in the Springs last week. My CX-7 doesn't suffer anywhere near the lag you're talking about - up here or down there. It's a real shame you're suffering with this - your 7 should be a blast to drive like everyone else's!

Wish I could be more helpful - let me know if you need any other info from me. BTW, I'm curious what dealer you're working with (if you feel comfortable saying)? I got mine from Sill-TerHar in Broomfield.

PS - you might consider getting in touch with Tom Martino's folks if you don't get satisfactory resolution. At least know what your rights are. You can find more info at www.troubleshooter.com. Also, here's a link about Colorado's lemon law: http://www.carlemon.com/lemon/CO_law.html

Bob Penkhus Mazda is the dealer I have to deal with here in the springs. I dont know if I should trust them to try the TCM update or if i should go to another dealership and just stop dealing with them entirely. I am kind of leaning toward going to denver to find another dealer that has a newer build CX7 because I would love to drive a CX7 that doesnt have this 4 second delay at take off!!!

bond007,

The local dealer did the re-flash on my PCM and put a sticker on the door jam stating such reflash was done. Do you have a sticker on your door jam? I could take a picture of mine if you like. I think the idea behind that is so that other dealers would know the re-flash has already been done.
