I know August is coming up, and the only things on your mind is the movie "Balls of Fury" and "Rush Hour 3," but we should set something up almost equally as cool. Nothing will be as cool as Christopher Walken playing a ping pong warlord, so obviously we won't be shooting to be that high.
I don't like throwing the word meet when it's more of a hangout get together setup with mostly people we already know. But anyway, maybe we can get a bunch of people to come to Austin, taking a break from school or work.
Things of interest to do in Austin or surrounding areas:
1. Food, especially BBQ
2. Texas Ski Ranch (New Braunfels)
3. 2222, LCR, Mopac, etc.
4. Guitar Hero 1/2/80's edition/hacked editions
5. Photoshoot
I just threw down a few things off the top of my head, feel free to add suggestions on things to do.
This is being planned by the other mazda 3 forums, but as always, any mazda is welcome to join. In fact, it would be nice to have more than just one or two proteges show. Currently, there are about 6 people making the trip over from houston and maybe a few more from the dallas area. There may even be someone coming from St. Louis!!!
*THIS IS NOT A STATEWIDE MEET. WE ARE JUST GETTING TOGETHER TO HANG OUT*
Basic outline for the weekend:
Friday:
Everyone comes in from out of town, bowling, dinner, photos?, guitar hero, etc....
Saturday:
1. 7:30 AM - Meet up at the capital and take pics there with all our cars. Let me rephrase, take pics OF the cars. I'm sure nobody is interested in seeing our ugly mugs.
2. 8:15 AM - Head up Mopac to 2222 and take it all the way to the lake where we can then scoot over to LCR for a quick back and forth.
3. 9:45 AM - Then head down 620 to Bee Cave and cross over to Hamilton Pool Rd, then FM-12 to Dripping Springs. Then take Creek Rd from Dripping Springs over to 165, then down to Blanco where we can stop, get gas, and have lunch at the Sunshine Cafe by 11:00 AM.
4. 12:30 PM - Leave Blanco and go south to Boerne. There are several routes to take, we can find the twistiest one on a map and program it into my GPS and play follow the leader. Be in Boerne by 1:30 PM.
5. 1:30 PM - take off from Boerne and head straight to Bandera, arrive by 2:00 PM.
6. 2:00 PM - Leave Bandera and head to Vanderpool where we would jump on 337 to Leaky, arrive by 3:00 PM
7. 3:00 PM - Leave Leakey and head West on 337 to Camp Wood, then North on 335 to 41, East to 336, and South back to Leaky
8. 5:00 PM - Leave Leakey and head up 83 to 39, then east to Hunt where we can have an early dinner at Elaine's Table there.
9. 6:30 PM - Leave Elaine's Table restaurant and heave over to the mini Stonehenge and Easter Island Heads for more pics of our cars, okay, and some of us at the mini Stonehenge and Easter Island Heads.
10. 7:00 PM - Leave the mini Stonehenge and head back towards Austin via Fredericksburg, back in town by 9:30 PM for a late snack consisting of some 6th street pizzas followed by some pool and beers, (lemonades for the kidos).
Okay, after I typed all this out I went on GoogleMaps and mapped out the whole thing which gave me distances and approximate times. The entire trip would be around 483 miles and take 10 hours, 38 minutes. That's if you're driving the speed limit, so you can probably shave a total of 2 hours off that drive time to about 8.5 hours of actual driving. Throw in 4 hours of miscellaneous stopping for pictures of the very scenic countryside and meals and gas, and that's about 12.5 hours we'll be gone, which puts us back in Austin by more like 8:45 PM instead of 9:30 PM like I stated above. Also, my inbetween towns times might be a bit off, but the extra long link at the bottom should take you of the map I plotted out.
I know that all this might sound like a lot of driving to some of you, but I've done it before, on a motorcycle, and it's not that bad on a bike, so it would be much better in a car where you have A/C, a seat that's comfortable, and a nice stereo to listen to your favorite tunes while cruzing thru the twisties, hair pin turns, and 180 degree switchbacks.
This would take care of our entire day. Afterwards, we can go to someone's house and play video games, drink beers, eat whatever (if we decide not to go to 6th street at least for some pizza), play cards, talk about our ride. Maybe if we video the thing we can play it back.
Your thoughts? I would definitely go if this were to be our itinerary. Wink
