Why are dealers so dumb?

So I go up to my local Mazda dealer today to test drive an MSP. Well, we go to start the car, and the battery was dead. Then, he has to go around back cuz the car had no fuel in it. He comes back around, and I ask him if these cars take premium fuel (which I know they do) and he's says no, regular unleaded is just fine. Since when does anyone, much less a dealer, not run premium fuel in an FI car? What a moron. Oh and then I say something about how much boost they are running, he says 6psi, and continues to say that "they (Mazda) didnt put a boost in the car cuz they knew that people would mess with them and turn up the turbo." :wtf: I think I might try to get a job up there:D

i think lacking common sense and car knowledge is a requirement to be a car salesman. they test it in the interviewing process

The bottome line is this, most car salesman dont give a damn about the cars they sell. Ive known a few carsalesmen, and they bounce around from dealer to dealer in persuit of the highest sales and commisions possible. It is very rare that you'll find an actual car enthusiest selling cars.

I think I had the best sales guy. He was about middle 20's I would say, and he owned a Mazdaspeed. Heck he even took me out in his and was tearing it up on some back roads. We were waiting to get my car cleaned and prepped, and we sat in his car and he was showing me everything, and how to work the radio, even how to take off the stock air box and put his K&N cone filter on :P It was awesome because he didn't have to BS me about the car, he told me the good and the bad, and when I asked questions, he had answers. I was glad he was about my age and owned one too. Every other sales rep, I would question anything they told me.

I was convinced that my salesman was great when he knew why I sat in the car idling for a minute after our test drive. He knew all the factory mods and knew that you have to let a turbo car run for a minute or so after driving.

He's probably in his late 40's, knew i knew my s*** about the car, and respected me for it. Any time I go in for service he sees me and stops to talk. I couldn't be more pleased.

My dealer was like half intelligent about the MSP. He thought it had like 160 hp. and then when I was going to drive it away, he offered a full tank of gas. So, I'm like yeah, and he is about to go get the car and fuel it up behind the store. Then I stop him to ask if it is premium. "No, you don't need that we just have regular, and I had to go and show him in the damn owners manual "PREMIUM ONLY YOU GENIUS".....sigh.....

So I wonder of some of the "broken" MSPs out there are because the dealers are putting s*** gas in them and putting them away hot?

For a time I was regularly stopping inand screwing withthe sales guys at the dealership about the cars. When I bought the P5, the salesmanger asked me to teach and mazda corse for his sales guys (thumb)

Most car salesmen are dumb, few good ones out there, but most.. nah.

Also, this is a water and oil cooled turbo. Letting it idle isnt 100% necessary, and wont really hurt it....

Yeah, Mazda's site says the turbo is designed to cool if shut down hot:

The water cooling lines that run to the turbo allow the unit to resist the traditional 'coking' of oil during hot engine shut-downs. When the engine is shut down and the turbo is still very hot, a thermal syphon is created in the turbo water jacket. This has the effect of thermally pumping water through the turbo to keep it cool.

However, the manual and the cardboard wrap over the driver's visor recommend idling to cool the turbo. I tend to let it idle just to be safe but I wouldn't worry if I forgot once or twice.

mitsubishi turbos are water cooled, and there are plenty of pictures of oil coked on a turbo after ~100k. water cooling isn't the save all, it just helps, but over time the oil will coke on the bearings

the only place i ever seen a car salesman actually knowledgeble enough to answer every question is when my buddy was getting his Porshe.

but that might be because every single salesman in there owned a porshe :D

but then again most of the dealers know enough not to buy the MSP so i guess they aint TOO bad

The two salesmen I talked to, at different dealers, had both been to a Mazda class on the 'Speed, and both knew all the right stuff about it. Also, two of the service writers at one of the dealerships had been to MazdaSpeed school, and had lap time on a track in the car. I thought it was one of the requirements for being a MazdaSpeed dealer.

It rreally sucks that a salesman would tell you s*** like that, but I guess I shouldn't be too surprised, given that I have wrenched for all GM dealerships and was service manager for Toyota. Almost all the sales guys at all the dealers were dumb as bricks about how cars worked.
