who's got the tools? bolts won't budge

Hey folks,

I decided to change my battery (Saturday I had to jump my car after it sat in the cold for 16 hrs), and go for an Optima Red Top. However, to get to the battery, I need to remove the strut tower bar. Bazooka Joe helped me install the bar (thanks!), and he used an air tool to screw the bolts down on it. Lemme tell you, they are in there tight :) I can't get them to budge with the tools that I have (the only thing I have is a 10" ratchet, really).

So any suggestions on how to get these off? Does anyone have a breaker bar or something that I could use real quick to get the strut bar off to change the battery? Air tools? :)

if you can start the car, take to a local shop and have them take it off. you can also try a piece of steel pipe slid over the wrench for some added torque?
sorry your not closer to me or i'd come over!

After you get the bar off and replace the battery, remount the bar with the correct torque setting. According to the FSM, the 4 bar mounting nuts should be tightened to 13 to 19 ft/lbs. Definitely not a setting requiring air tools to achieve.

Yeah, I guess we didn't know what the stock torque settings were supposed to be. I really should pick up a torque wrench, so that I know that I'm putting in the proper torque for sure.

BTW, I moved to Waltham, MA, as of a month ago, so I'm a little closer to ya now (but only by like 10-15 mins). Way closer to Boston, which is nice.

i have a torque wrench now, if you want to borrow it? let me know and i can meet you at my office.

im having the same problem with one of the bolts on the passenger seat.....

I dont have a pipe to slip over it so i guess im gonna have to go pick up a bigger ratchet

I haven't tried yet, I'm going to meet Ryan Friday and he'll bring his breaker bar (5x longer than my ratchet) over and we can try to get them off then.

....installed optima at 11:30 tonight before we went out drinking. made a logical decision there i believe.....although I would probably not have gotten as cold if we installed it after drinking?

my neighbors probably think i am crazy working on a friend's car at such a late hour and with the frigid weather......thanks for the food and beer tonight astral....
