I notice that factory red letter white face gauges don't illuminate that well at night and I wonder if these are any good?

yeah, those have been around F O R E V E R. if you get them, DO NOT try to remove your gauge needles - they will break.

as to the dim gauges: are you sure you dont have any gauge bulbs out?

the red lighting makes them hard to see if i need to use my lights on a cloudy day for me, at night i can see it great, +1 for checking your bulbs for burned out ones. i do like that look though i may do that to mine!

I took my cluster out, and removed the rubber cover over the bulb. Now it is alot brighter.

4 or 5 screws & 2 wiring clips....that's about it...

Nope you don't need to remove the steering wheel. Just drop the steering wheel down, remove the outer trim piece, then remove the cluster.

You don't have to remove the steering wheel on any car to remove the cluster.

OP: just replace the old bulbs and if you like remove the bulb condoms, if the rheostat is all the way up it should be plenty bright.
