Wheel hop

After three months and 5000 km, we finally encountered rain with the 5.

07' GT 5spd, all stock including Toyos, 23000km. Accelerating past 3000 rpm in first gear triggered massive wheel hop as a/the front tire(s) broke loose.

Wheel spin in the dry also hammers the front suspension.

Is this normal? Typical?

rain / stock Toyos / 23000km / 3000 rpm in first gear ?

Buahahahaha! (lol)

Lighten up on the 1st gear in the rain, heck my auto trans Premacy (M5) can break tread easy in the rain anyones can, so lighten up a bit esp in THE RAIN = danger (zombies)

ANSWER = bootman says:

Sounds like you will need to replace those Toyos with some decent rubber.

AND lighten up on pop'n that clutch, buddy, new tires will be gone in weeks ya keep doing that . (iagree)

Bald tires ARE going to give you the most traction, WHEN DRY so if you've been shaking the kids teeth lose each stop light, you just need to rev down or START in 2nd gear at a stop light.

Good luck! and post some picture of that tread you've got: "stock Toyos / 23000km "

Peace!(rei)

Thanks for the driving lesson SGT.

After 35 years behind the wheel of hundreds of vehicles, front, rear and AWD, I can safely say that I have experienced a wide variety of cars.

I have drag raced, circle tracked, off roaded, drifted, and generally caused mayhem behind the wheel of a load of cars, trucks and vans (and quite a few motorcycles).

Very few have wheel-hopped as badly as my 5, but only in the wet. On dry pavement, just good old tread-eating spin.

Shocks, suspension geometry, and limited slip (or lack of) have been the culprit, rather than tires (unless they were brand new or had heavy lugs).

Just looking for those with similar experiences with wheel hop in the wet.

Hey KBrian I know exactly where you're coming from. I have the same prob with my AT. One of the downsides of FWD. Spinning the tires faster eliminates the hopping until traction is obtained then it bangs like hell! I would think that unless we rebuild our suspensions, swap to stiffer motor mounts and install better tires we have to avoid the wet weather spinnerama.

I think you have hit the nail on the head, Fivo.

Short of new shocks/springs or a LSD, I will have to behave myself.
