yeah its just like my old honda ..my exhaust is jet black now and she is blowing very noticable black smoke when taking off or getting the rpms above 4000 ... what do you all think .. do you think warrenty should ahve anything to do in this?? would they cover the repairs???/

I think you should put your p5 to a stock form and go to a stealer. The car only has 20k miles for god sake!!! and it's already burning oil........My other mazda 323 has 120k and it's fine. knock on wood.

any one else interested in this .. to give me a hand on what you think .. I called mazda this morning and when I advised what was happening he says oh yeah ... that happends due to a feul build up in the Cat!!!!!! PLEASSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE my car has never smoked in any way shape or form and he is telling me that it is gas build up .. gee isnt that a dangerous thing to have building up .... so I,ll be dropping her off to mazda on thursday

It could be possible that the cat is "clogged" but not with that few of miles. But hey this is why you have a warrenty. But do take off any mods that you have before going. Realistically a intake should not void it, but if you do have one remove it to avoid hassles.

btw oil is blue smoke, not black. Black is generally related to fuel to carbon deposits.

What mods have you done to the engine? Spark Plugs, ignition stuff?? I am curious as to what could be causing this as well...

Injen CAI, Ractive exhaust , oh yeah dont forget the extra whp i get from all my red wire loom LOL ... other then that I really dont have any other engine performace stuff at this time .. i run 93 octane consistantly .. so I have always known that burning oil will give off a blue hazy smoke and stink but this is pure black .. and it has never done this in the past although i have redlined her quite a few times and I do drive her hard but i mean I am not regularly beating on her .. I get the oil changes early each time and I use good s*** too so I know this will be another hassle since it always is whit Mazda ..and I know they will give me s*** about what ever they can ..the guy is a complete dick and always says oh there is notihng wrong .. its fine

Black Smoke

While you were sleeping, someone did an engine swap and put a desiel in your car. Be sure your community doesn't have a "black smoke" or an "engine brake" ordinances. Officer Bob will be hauling you over with the 18 wheelers.
Seriously, I'd say the motor is running very rich or the cat. conv. is somehow hosed. If this were my vehicle, I'd check two things. 1. I'd run the engine codes for any anomoly. 2. I'd pull the plugs to see if they are carbon fouled or oil fouled. That would be another indication of what is going on inside.
However, I'm guessing that is what a service tech. would do also. Jim

Its that 93 octane. the higher octane makes the fuel burn slower and is letting more unburnt fuel into the cat and clogging it. the car wasnt meant for 93 octane, so dont use it :p

It most likely makes your car slower as well, (which may be percieved as smoother)

what is the best Octane to run with the P5's? i have been running 91 (highest octane avail. in the Bay Area); am i just wasting money?

yes, you are wasting money. The car was designed for 87 octane and will probably run the best with that octane. The MP3s (MSP maybe too, I don't know) had to use the higher octane because of a different ECU.

Now, running it occasionally will not hurt, but not every tank!

DAMN!!! i been wasting money for over a year! I always thought that higher octane was better on the car; i guess that i should have kept being cheap...

run 87. yeah you are :D

more octane doesnt = better performance unless you have the right set up, like turbo, high comp, or advanced timing like the mp3.

Run only 87. I run 87 only and my runs great. No pinging, no smoking, no nothing. 27000 miles and nothing. Do a search and you find out more on this.

The MSP is 93 only. I know this isn't a Mazda, but my old Accord did drive differently with a higher octane and it was the usual "Unleaded 89 Only" kinda deal.

It's just like running synthetic oil.. Is it necessary for a N/A car? No. Does it help considerably? Yeah.

it does not help the p5 . as we can see with mp5raycer's situation.

it will only "help considerably" if you have turbo or high compression... msp's situation doesn't carry over to p5s.

the MSP is completely different because of turbo. But on the P5 ONLY USE 87. I had all kinds of problems when I first got my car and one of the things the dealer tried to blame i on was the gas. He kept saying that I was putting 93 and higher in it. Uh nooooooooooo. Only 87. But they said that just that will cause all kinds of problems for a P5. The computer just can't handle it. and to think I have to run 93 in my truck or it pings like a chinese phone book.

man...honestly I didn't know... I thought higher octane means improving regarding gas mileage.
from now on it's 87 time!!!
