Turbo for people near Montreal

I live in Laval, Quebec and I found a place called Extreme Machine Performance. They do Turbo installation. I called them and they think there's no problem to install a Turbo on an MP3. They suggest me a Garret T3 with an intercooler. They told me that we can get 50%hp gain at 8psi, a very safe pressure for a stock engine. If you add 50% to 140hp, that give you 210hp! :D

I have a metting with them next Thursday (27). If everything is like it sound on the phone, I'll do it right after the Holidays! They need the car for 2 or 3 weeks :D :D

EXCELLENT! i'm from Laval too and i'm thinking about getting a turbo... but how much will it be approximatively?? did they gave you an idea? btw tu viens de quel coin de Laval? :eek: :eek:
 
I went to Extreme Machine this morning.

It's a small shop but those guys seems to know a lot about turbo. The base price is $3500 (canadian). This include: A Garret T3 turbo, mandrel bent tubing, 4 extra injectors, home made intercooler and header and the necessary gages. The only thing that is not include is the Apexi S-AFC module. It is necessary to go over 6psi. I'll go for 10psi. This suppose to give around 210hp on the MP3 and it's a safe zone. For a stock engine, it's safe under 12 or 13 psi.

They don't modify original parts. So if I want to remove the turbo for a waranty purpose, there's no problem.

If everything goes as planed, they will start to work on my car on the January 3. They need the car for 2 or 3 weeks.

Awesome. The T3 is what I figured out to use using this Turbo calculator thing. 10psi may be a little risky w/out new rods and pistons...but hey, it's your car. Keep us informed!
 
Just remember, its better to be safe then sorry...the amount of psi a NA motor can take depends on its internal strength...here in SoCal I know of this tuner shop that does turbo kits for various imports...and I remember talking with the owner about a turbo kit for the 240sx/altima engine which is a 2.4L 4 banger. The owner said he would not recommend anything over 6 psi on a stock motor...he witnessed several people turning the boost past 6psi and as a result melting pistons/blowin the engine...and this is on a large Nissan 4 banger...not a weak engine (iron block).

I know many factors are important (fuel, compression, piston/rod strength, etc) but guys watch the psi levels on your stock engines! :cool:

Oh...also the amount you drive is an important factor...if you turbo a daily driver then you must be very careful of psi levels...more air = more power = increased heat.

Hummmm, I got realy differents opinions on this. Some people said that it's realy safe under 10psi and some think it's to high :confused: :confused: :confused:
 
Like I said earlier (and in another thread)...you have to take it easy. At first you said 10PSI...later you said 12psi...I wouldn't go past 8, at BEST unless I got new rods+pistons. Personally, mine would be @ 6.
 
At 6psi, this will give around 180hp and it's cheaper because we don't realy need the S-AFC since it's not to much of a change in fuel alimentation. I read in Turbo magazine that you can go up to 6 psi whitout the S-AFC.

With 8 psi, it will give around 200hp. But this will need the S-AFC.

Maybe I'll go for only 6psi at first and see what it look like and if I need more power, I'll add the S-AFC and go for 8psi.

What do you think of that?
 
Ok.. logically

If you spend lets say 4 grand on a turbokit even if you don't plan on going over 8 psi why wouldn't you pick up a AFC $300 for the added protection of having more fuel. Rather than to run lean because you picked up a bad tank of gas.

Boost doesn't kill engines... Detonation kills engines...

Take for example, SCC Shiv Pathak's 2.5RS, stock block the guy is making easily 300whp.

Why because he has the right tunning.

If you plan on turboing your car, do it right or don't do it at all.

9:1 compression is relatively low compared to all the Honda's with compression ratios in the ballpark of 10:4 or more..
 
Our engines can probably hold out at a maximum of about 8psi with a fuel pressure regulator and fuel pump. And thats pushing it, If I were to run with just a FPR and pump I would be set at about 6psi. Now if you plan on upgrading your injectors with an S-AFAC you could probably go to a max of 9psi safley on stock internals. But remember you can only increase you injector size by about only 10% on a stock ecu because if you go to big your Idle and off boost driveabilty will be like crap even with with an S-AFC using to trim out the fuel in off boost situations. Trust me I know I have been there and done that. I took a look at our pistons and rods. The rods look very strong and stout. We also have a solid block unlike crappy hondas that can only handle about 9 psi on stock internals. Mazda is known for producing strong engines.
Now if you could go with a stand alone engine managmnet system and have extra precise control over your timing, Ignition and Boost curves you can push the envelope a little farther probably around 10 -13psi. If you use this in conjuction with forged pistons and rods and upgraded chromoly piston rings you can probably boost about 15-17lbs. I used to have a 99 miata with stock internals and boosting abot 16psi with a stand alone engine managment system with no problems. My buddy also had a 99 miata and boosted 9psi on his car with just a FPR and fuel pump and detonated his motor and buckled a rod after 2 weeks of driving. So you can see that many variables are involved here.
 
The guys at the shop told me they will add another set of injector and keep the original in place, is it better than put largers injectors???

From what I can see from all your comments and from what I read in Turbo magazine, 6psi is a very safe pressure with a stock engine. And 8psi with S-AFC can be safe too.

To answer to IMPREZD, the S-AFC is $419 us, that make almost $670 canadian. So if I don't realy need it with 6psi, I can save $700.

At 6psi without the S-AFC, it cost me around $100/hp (canadian)

At 8psi with the S-AFC, it cost around $80/hp.

Is it worth it compare to NA modification?
 
hey, listen if i am willing to give my car to them for 3 wks...would they do a u.s vehicle??..i am willing to drive to montreal..so see what htey can do

I can ask them or you can send them an email. It's around $4000 canadian, it can be very cheap for you, something like $2500 US. It can be interesting for you since you are from New York.

I am selling my S-AFC because I have no use for it I will be running a stand alone engine managment system on my car.

As for 2 additional or 4 additional injectors it is common amongst forced induction cars that are using injector drivers. This is fine for fueling needs but is not better than just upgraded injectors with a stand alone system. Reason being is that when the fuel squirts out of the injectors it does not appropriatly distrubute fuel where it is needed and causes a lean condition. But for anything under 10 psi additional injectors are perfectly fine. But the shop that shop STOU that is doing your custom install ask them what unit are they using as an injector driver??? Because an S-AFC will not have control over these paramaters.
