trouble removing intake manifold

Hi all,

I was removing parts from the bay and nearly got the manifold out, but there are 2 bolts that attach to the engine, one is near the egr pipe, the other is on the opposite side on the bottom half of the runners and I have no clue how to get at them... I don't have spanning wrenches as i never found the need for them.

Any suggestions?

On a side note, when the car is parked and off, when I wiggle the steering wheel back and forth, there is a knocking coming from the front left wheel area. Inner tie rods?

Finally got the plenum out... And managed to take off the EGR pipe, the trick was vice-grips ;)

And here is what I was looking for:

As for steering knock, while under the car, I tugged at the tie rod ends and nothing seems to be moving.

Has anyone painted their plenum? I have seen a plenum for sale that was painted, but anyone have any experience with that sort of thing?

If you're ambitious, pull the head and see if anything is damaged. If you're feeling lucky, put it back together and hope it works ok. If you have all the VICS plates, you can get the VICS recall kit and loctite the screws. Otherwise, you could get a spare intake and put that on there. Unless you want to take a shot arguing with Mazda, you're probably on your own.

The problem is that they don't sell the screws for the butterfly valves and the recall kit is "several hundred dollars". It just upsets me that although this car is not part of the recall, it really should have been. Additionally, I am not asking them to do any work, I just want to get the damn screws...

Called up Mazda Canada and the dealer, both told me there was no recall on my car... What do I do now??

Just remove the VICS plates and call it a day. I did mine more than a year ago. I lost a bit of low end, but noticed a bit more in the high revs. As far as cold starts, this winter was pretty brutal for the mid-west with average temps in the low teens, and never had a prob starting. If you find a new intake later down the road, you can replace it then, but you can get back to driving after removing the butterfly valves.

There's a "VICS recall kit." It comes with all of the gaskets you need along with new screws. I think it runs less than 20 bucks. FSY1-13-SRZ is the part number for it. Just make sure you Loctite ALL of the screws (remove the old ones that haven't fallen out and do them as well).

If you can get a hold of another butterfly valve, you could take the one remaining screw to a hardware store, measure the threads, and get four new ones. Both Lowes and Home Depot have a thread measuring tool next to the fasteners. Pick up some red Loctite too, and reassemble.

When I spoke to the dealer, they said several hundred for the recall kit... I will have to give them that part number and let them double check it.

You forget I live in Canada ;) I don't think there was a single time I was able to find a bolt to match anything on a car anywhere locally. Thanks for the tip though.

I did get a quote from the scrap yard and they want $35 for the entire manifold.

The kit is listed a few places online. They may be quoting you for the entire recall manifold kit. I know that part number is good since I ordered two of them about a month ago. It has all of the gaskets you'll need to put it back together as well as a full set of screws. The dealer may have one sitting on a shelf in inventory somewhere.

I recommend porting the manifold and removing the butterfly plates on the VTCS (not the VICS that fell out on you) while you have everything apart. There's a how-to on this site.

A+ advice. Thank you very much for that advice. I was planning to remove VTCS, but I don't know if I will port the plenum because I prefer low end power.

That part number did save me though, cheers :)
