TPMS replacement with new tires?

I'm looking into getting new tires as OEM's will not get me through winter. Some places tell me that replacing some of the TPMS is required and some places say it's recommended. Depending on a place this runs 30-50 bucks, so I wanted to ask the forum before coughing up the money. Do I have to do it or is this really just the way to get more moey out of my pocket?

Tire shops are supposed to replace the TPMS seals and nut when the sensors are removed to change the tires. The sensors do not necessarily have to be removed, but there is a risk if they are left mounted in the wheel that they will be broken during tire removal. Most shops will remove the nut and drop the sensor into the tire for safe tire removal. Some shops may re-use the original nuts and seals which may result in a slow leak around the valve stem. It would require removing the tire and replacing the seals and nut if that happened.

The TPMS manufacturers state the seals and nut must be replaced if the sensor is removed, so there is no fuzz on that. It is up to the tire shop to do the right thing. By the way, you can buy the nut/seal kits for about $2 from online shops. Local places tend to charge way more than this - as much as $20 for a single tire kit.

You are NOT required to replace the TPMS units when you get new tires. You only replace when the seals are old or leaking. I just had tires replaced and the units were visually inspected and they were good. They do not need to be removed when getting new tires installed.

i just had new tires month ago didn't remove tps they still work fine no reason to remove them thats just a gimmick to make money

You are NOT required to replace the gasket on your oil fill plug when you change your oil either. Is it a good idea.... Yes. Same thing here.

And no, you do not even have to remove the TPMS sensors when changing tires. But if you do not, there is a much greater chance the tire will catch on the sensor and damage it. If you are in the tire business, you will not want to pay for sensors out of your profits, so you will insist your workers follow the suggestion of the TPMS manufacturers and drop them inside the tire before removing the tire.

Good point Rix6. My tire guy carefully inspected my TPMS units and found no evidence of seal deterioration so he left them on during remove. He did comment that I had such low mileage on the units that he expected no issues. Led me to believe that they will remove and replace seals when the units are older.

i have never on any car changed the oil plug gasket an never had 1 leak
