The intermittent windshield wipers

Did anyone upgrade the 2-speed intermittent windshield wipers to variable speed one?
Thanks all

I know quite a few have posted that they have, and love the mod. If you do a search, you'll find quite a few responses.

I just did this last night.
I happen to own a 2001 MPV and my 2003.5 PR5.
Swap was really easy; the hardest part was getting the steering column shroud off the MPV. Three Phillips screws on the underside of the column. The 2 that are closest to the wheel itself are gold'ish colored with vicious thread and the one further down is black and looks more like a machine screw thread. A standard #2 Phillips will work on all three of them. Once you get the sleeve off, you'll notice two smaller Phillips screws on top and bottom of wiper stalk and a white Molex type plug at bottom. Unplug the plug first, then unscrew. It is off. Get the new stalk installed and reverse the order. One suggestion I would have is to snap the column shroud back together before trying to get the screws back on. It makes it easier. The entire process of swapping them took 20 minutes? Wait for a warm sunny day maybe because if the plastic is cold you are more likely to snap the retaining clips on the shroud. Works very well. Yes, my wife called me the rainy morning after I tried this to explain to me that something was 'different' about her wipers...

good feeling action... already called around to all the salvage yards looking for a replacement.

Thanks Deansweet!
So what you did was swaped your wife's MPV wipers control with your PR5, right? You didn't have to change anything else like the relay or something? If it's that easy I am gonna go to the junk yard to get the parts;)

And also do you have any picture? Thanks
The intermittent windshield wipers control only has 2 fixed speeds not the variable speed. Even Sentra has the variable one.

well, I can get pictures when I get the new one and swap her out. tzh, yes everything is on the wiper stalk itself, no other parts are needed to swap out. It's pretty cool modification and if you need a reason to do this just ask my lovely wife.

Vulcanon:
the wiper control stalk/switch/control arm/whatever you want to call it on the late model Mazda MPV's has a rotating dial on the stalk itself that allows you to control how frequently the wiper blades go. It's called variable adjust intermittent wiper control. The ones that come from the factory on my PR5 was either too fast or too slow and this allows you to adjust to your liking. I saw somewhere online the switch new cost like $50-60? I will keep looking at salvage yards unless my wife pushes the swap.

Got one more question, do you know if the control from other model (such as 626, Miata, Tribute and Millenia) works as well?
Thanks again.

that is the part you swaped right?

Q: I live in a wet climate area and would like to have more control over my windshield
wipers. Is there anything I can do?
A: A variable intermittent wiper control lever can be installed to provide fine tuning
of the time interval of the intermittent wiper setting. Unfortunately, no direct "bolt
on" upgrade for the 1st and 2nd generation Proteg's exist. The MX-3 parts will
not work either, since the control hubs are a very different design. The European
spec 1st generation's control switches will fit into the car, but is not electrically
compatible directly. The wiring will have to be extensively modified for the
controls to work. Fortunately, as part of the corporate cost cutting measures,
some of the parts from the MPV, Tribute, and European 626 are interchangable
with the 3rd generation Proteg's. Of those parts, the wiper controls from those
cars can be swapped into the 3rd generation Proteg's. The control lever from
the 97-02 European 626 sedan will fit into all 3rd generation sedans. This part
must be imported from an importer. Only the control lever from the 99+ MPV,
2000+ Tribute, or 97-02 European 626 wagon/hatchback will work with the
Proteg 5 and can be purchased locally. The part numbers are:
GE6M-66-128 variable intermittent wiper lever (from 97-02 Euro 626 sedan)
GE6V-66-128 variable intermittent wiper lever with rear wiper control (from
99+ MPV, 00+ Tribute, 97-02 European 626 wagon/5 door hatchback)

hm I might have to try this, along with my autodimming mirror my car is getting more and more MPVish

I am with Bazooka on this one, I think they are very close to being the same speed on high setting.

One of the best mods you can do! Just fyi, slow delay on MPV is 10 seconds and the fastest delay is ~2.5 seconds. Stock P5 is around 5 seconds.
