This is not to be confused with a FM transmitter. This "Scosche FM-MOD02 FM Modulator" is hard wired directly into the radio, a very common way to add a CD changer back in the day. Like many I was looking for a way to add a Aux-In to my 07 Mazda5. AuxMod looks like they are not offered any more. I found and bought this hard wired FM modulator instead. Honestly I bought ti before I found out GROM made an AUX input that plugged directly into the head unit or I would have went with it instead. But, one advantage of the scosche FM Modulator is that it keeps your CD Changer or Sat. Its also the cheapest option out there at $27.05 with free shipping from Amazon.

There are two main parts to the setup. The actual FM Modulator box and the Aux Input on-off assembly. How it works is FM-Mod unit plugs directly into the antenna jack of your head unit. The Antenna plugs into the FM Modulator. You turn the unit on and it feeds your signal directly into your head unit via one of two FM frequencies. You have the choice between two frequencies, 87.9 and 88.3. Since it is hard wired in the sound is much clearer then the FM transmitters. I know some of the nicer units will actually filter out in comming transmissions at the selected FM frequency but I'm honestly not sure if this unit does that. But, it works well in my car and in my area. Sound is clear.

From start to finish it took me about an hour. The hard part was figuring ouyt where to place the unit and how to route the wires. I ended up installing it on the passenger side of the center console, zip tied to a hunk of metal. I was able to route the antenna wires cleanlt behind the stereo. Only thing to note is that you need to make sure you route the antenna wire behind the metal support bracket located behind the stereo or it will keep your stereo from seating all the way.

I tapped power from the cigarette lighter.

I routed the wires under the center console. I haven't mounted the aux input switch assembly yet but you can see here where I plan on attaching it. It was dark out by the time I got done and with the black interior makes it impossible to see. I wanted to make sure I get it lined up perfectly before I install it. It installed with double backed foam tape.

My only complaint of the setup is that the materials could be of better quality. Inserting a 3.5mm jack into the input feels coarse and scratchy. You can see there are some exposed wires on the back side of the assembly (though honestly installed where I have it, you can't see the wires unless you stick your head in the floorboard). The wires are all held together with what looks like regular electrical tape. But, the unit works and seems to do a good job.

It's an aux-in and nothing more.

Interesting, I did not know if it was an FM modulator. How is the sound quality? I used to have a Harman & Kardon kit connected through an FM Modulator and hated the sound quality... got a new deck with aux-in and connected it that way instead. I don't know if it was just a bad FM modulator.
