2006 Mazda 5
Hello, I am new to this forum and couldn't find the right answer to my question. I have an 2006 Mazda5 with 66,000 miles. Last 9 months there has been loud humming noise coming from the rear. Thought it was bad tires got new set last July.
Still more noise.
Repair shop (not a dealer) had the Mazda for half a day and best they could come up with was the wheel bearing and hub assembly. I didn't buy it since they said there was no play. It almost seemed like they were guessing.
Heading to Florida in two weeks and had a friend of mine who wrenches and races for NASA take a look. He drove it checked the bearings no play, but then he touched the hub and said it was hot to the touch and should be at best ambient temp.
How hard is this fix to do backyard style? He said Mazda probably has a special tool to remove the bearing and hub.
More importantly is this a common problem. We bought the Mazda used in 2009 and it had a mismatched set of tires, but I read a few threads then that said the factory tires wore quickly and the first owner just slapped a pair of Dunlop Sports Signatures on it for the time being.

Just curious, how is the noise? I wonder if I have similar problem...

I just got my used Mazda5 so I kinda don't have anything to compare with. But it gets quite loud from the rear around 35-40 km/h, with a low pitch noise. It'll actually get better and the noise pitch becomes higher as I speed up. Is it the same thing or is it just the tires for me?
