Does anyone know of a automatic transmission fluid that I could use instead of what my car came with to make it shift where I dont really "feel" the shifts happening through the seat of my pants and the rest of the car.....

Mine just really jerks into gear sometimes even on light acceleration.

I would really love this car if I could find a solution to make it "grease through" the gears and I just hear the shifts. Sometimes it does this and it is awesome when it does.

Or is not the trans fluid and Im just stuck with erratic computer control???

I am willing to try anything,,,,I guess starting with new trans fluid.

I doubt new fluid would change anything, which is good because it's very difficult to change ALL the fluid - About 50% of it is trapped in the torque converter, so when you do a "change" you wind up with a mix which is about 50% old and 50% new - You'd have to change it 3 or 4 times (with a little driving in between) before you'd wind up with anywhere near a 100% change - Even then, you'd still be at just 90% or so . . . . . :(

Softer Shifting...

First time I've heard of someone wanting an automatic to shift softer and not harder. Don is correct with what he says. However, I've replaced the ATF in every automatic I've had since '92 with Mobil1 ATF and it's firmed up the shifting considerably in every transaxle. Even my '97 Civic shifts more crisply now and it felt like a CVT since day one.

On a different note, I wonder if the transaxle controls are employing fuzzy logic or adaptive logic. I haven't seen anything in writing to back this up. My wife drives our P5 (and quite gently at that) and in auto mode, it shifts very softly. Even in manual mode, the shifts are slow and soft. Last year I rented a P5 for week while I was on business and by the time I turned it in, it was hammering the shifts much harder than our car does. My old Saturn coupe did this. If you drove it hard, it would learn to shift hard and at higher rpms.

the automatic

Hey Jim Frye,

by chance do you know what kind of trans fluid your Civic had that made it CVT like?? That is the effect or close to it that I would like to have.

I would assume OE Honda automatic trans fluid. ;)

I'm thinking of trying either RedLine ATF, or Mobil1 ATF. My trans shifts nice and firm when I want it to, but I'd love to give one of these fluids a try.
