New and wanting HELP!!!

Hi guys,
Im new on here!
I have a 99 Mazda Protege LX.... I just recently purchased it..
When I bought it the unbelievably smart jackass that had it before me took the PCV valve off and didnt put it back on.
He also messed with the timing belt and got it so it was one notch off....
So that being said I fixed the PCV valve and the timing.... Which was easy so why it wasnt done right in the first place is beyond me.... I mean I am a 20 year old female and I managed to do it!! s***! I think it was lazy-ness....
ANYWAYS.... My check engine light is on.... I went to plug my computer into the OBD2 port and it wasnt reading at all... It wasnt even turning on... Can anyone help?!!!
Like I said before I am a college student so I am trying to do this as cheap and as fast as possible!

depending on your reader you might have to plug it in then turn the car on for it to read

The car was on when we did the reading....

Well you can always take it to a shop for them to read the code.

THANKS!!! I took to advanced auto parts later and they said they couldnt read it.... Unfortunately I think I might have to take it in too have someone fix it. I need it working for the emissions test... :/
